Icarus Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 People are tired of hearing Justin, The Weeknd, Ariana and Dua on an endless repeating cycle for the past 3 years, they're turning pop radio off
Ger Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 Pop radio is in such a weird place right now. I still tune it, but I can't stay for too long, and the stations are very similar to each other. There's just no variety, and that wouldn't be a problem if at least the turnover for hits was way faster, but it isn't the case. What bothers me the most is how they keep playing absolutely overplayed smashes like IB, Miss Levitating, Mood, Shivers, SYT, STAY, etc. Man, give them some rest, we are so f*cking tired of hearing them. At this point I can't stand them, I have to change the station the moment I hear the damn intro, it's like not this a-f*ckin-gain. What has caught my attention is how CHR/Top 40 has started playing more "Gold" hits, don't know if I hadn't plaid attention before, but there are always some throwback song between current hits, which isn't very common for current-based formats. For example, songs like Yeah!, Lose Yourself, Low, TiK ToK, Bad Romance, Hot in Herre, Let Me Love You, I Write Sins Not Tragedies, and Thanks fr th Mmrs get often airplay on Pop radio. I guess it also has to be with the rise of catalog streams, TikTok trends and basically this new generation discovering 2000's classics. Radio is overall recovering from the pandemic, I believe, but ratings show the top formats to tune in the radio are: Adult Contemporary, Classic Hits, and News. At least it's nice to see these estimates getting more accurate, since reallity is radio hasn't been able to attract teen/young demographics.
Green Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 The fact that Bad Habits is still #8 on Radio Songs after 10 months
UnusualBoy Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 Not all the ancient songs gaining big again, imagine how tired we are.
AG Grande Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 I think lack of new hits plays a big role in the fact that radio keeps playing the same old songs over and over, i fail to name more than 2 hits released in 2022 (or maybe I've been out of touch lately).

Nothing should be spammed anymore. The Top 10 at Pop should be Big Energy, Enemy, As It Was, Bam Bam, She’s All I Want To Be, Boyfriend, Woman, First Class, The Motto and One Right Now. The argument that old songs are doing better on streaming which is why the old songs are doing better on radio I hate..because radios spamming them 24/7 they’re getting constant exposure which in turns helps with streaming and sales Edited April 23, 2022 by FAN

Don't know what Doja put on that song besides talent because I ALWAYS hear the song fully on the radio, and I have heard it probably 500 times, it's how good and timeless it is. The fact it's half beeps, yet GP loves it.

I don't even think ORN deserves to be top ten anymore. Camila's song is actually good and sounds nice on the radio so idk why pop radio isn't picking it up more. Boyfriend is also cute but its just toooooo Billie Eilish. 10 minutes ago, Ger-55 said: Yep yep. And also the fact that unlike the rest of the top ten Need to know was never meant to be a radio single or a single in general it was just a promo track that organically took off on its own with little playlisting. Her team was forced to send it to radio the demand was REAL. And it was so well loved it managed to go top ten on pop while Kiss me more and You Right were still in the top 10 on the format. Who else?

As for my favorite formats; Active Rock, Country & Alternative all lost market share but AAA totals don't look much different. I'll get a better idea when I do the audience charts Sunday night. Yes I do also listen to some Christian but I don't follow those charts nearly enough to know if those totals got a noticeable adjustment either way.
