Rawr Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 I'd love to see Don't Speak's hot 100 chart run, I feel like it would've easily been top 50 all time

Wannabe was a huge seller and was also #1 during the midst of its run atop radio. Finally, Can't Nobody Hold Me Down had huge sales but lacked good airplay for Don't Speak's last three weeks, but I still think it would've held #1 as Don't Speak was also decreasing in airplay noticably by then. Still it would've gotten 20+ weeks Top 10, and a #2/#3 peak. So possibly #75-100ish on the All-Time Hot 100.

(Stefani might've topped the chart earlier, as her band No Doubt's "Don't Speak" led the Radio Songs chart for a whopping 16 weeks in 1996-97. But, since it was not commercially-available as a single, it was not eligible to chart on the Hot 100, per rules at the time.) http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6553811/this-week-in-billboard-chart-history-ten-years-ago-gwen-stefanis I don't ever remember Billboard saying any airplay only song period would've for sure gone #1 if allowed to chart. And I believe the Hot 100 formula at that time was closely around: 1 million audience impressions = 1,000 sales. Back then the #1 song on radio got 70-100 million impressions. The chances of it being #1 when songs were selling 100-180K each week during it's peak (equal to 100-180 million impressions) along with also being hits on radio is like virtually 0.

Hootie & The Blowfish had four huge airplay songs from their debut album Cracked Rear View in 1995-96. However, with the album selling 16 million copies, people didn't bother to by their singles, and the four songs all peaked 6-15. Gold physical singles were very common then, and H&TB couldn't get any of their songs close to 500k. As a result, their biggest hit "Only Wanna Be With You," their biggest single, peaked at #6. Every song that hit #1 in 1996 at least went Platinum, with 5 2P, and every T5 song went Gold. After "Take A Bow" and "Kiss From A Rose" stalled at Gold but reached #1 in 1995, it wasn't until early 1998 that songs short of Platinum status could hit #1 on the H 100. DS would've needed one million total copies of CD & cassette singles to have reached #1. DS would've peaked at 8-10 had BB allowed airplay only songs to chart in 1996, since even H&TB had some meager sales going for them with their four hits from CRV. I'm not trying to sound difficult here, but I've posted about this topic repeatedly. Yes, DS was a HUGE airplay hit. But physical songs still sold very strongly in 1996 and 1997. So DS would've at best peaked toward the bottom of the Top 10.
brianc33710 Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 With downloads sales totals sliding, it looks like a race to the bottom for the #1 airplay hit will come pretty soon too. Puth was down to 118 M on RS last week, he's still losing, and no other song is close to catching up. When was the last time a song topped BB RS with under 100 M impressions? MB will likely have a sub-150 M #1 AI song sooner than later too.

Iris would've hit #3 in 1998 with airplay only points, Are You That Somebody #4, and Torn #5. Celine Dion could've come real close with "My Heart Will Go On," which set several audience records (117 M) when RS was limited to just T40, AC, HAC, Rhythmic, and Alternative. But she eventually got 2 weeks at #1 after her label released the single, which sold over half (360k) of its total shipment (650-700k) in its first week, and was 1-1-9-29-65-71 in its 6 brief weeks on Single Sales. Of course, Dion's song got double-digit week runs at #1 in many other countries, where her label DID release the song as a single from the beginning.

This is a great tea for when people accuse Mariah Carey's 1990s #1s of being radio driven, when in fact most of them are at least platinum coming off diamond records Edited September 29, 2017 by doonerr
R!ck Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 (edited) Looks like HAC had enough of LWYMMD probably getting the same peak as CTTR, why Hot AC is acting like this towards these Adult Pop radio staples like Katy and Taylor? I mean Katy got 6 #1s out of the TD era and Taylor got 5 consecutive #1s from 1989... Edited September 29, 2017 by R!ck
