The song is told through two different perspectives: 1) the person's strength of being selfless/sacrificing, 2) the person breaking down in their own weakness when they realise they are alone (in the desert, no longer a forest) and that being too selfless and sacrificing too much was not a blessing but rather a curse. In the chorus, the person removes their defences (the needles) and finally accepts that they are weak and not the strong person that they pretend to be to others.
