It's not traditional reggaeton, but you can hear the basic reggaeton structure and rhythm. It's not like it's a Lean On-type of song that's completely deviated from a reggaeton song.

And yes Despacito is generic and not great at all but that doesn't really matter because people actually like the song. Bailando is superior. Poor ha but Bieber is on this song which is why it's so massive. Despacito is generic, but Bailando isn't? And Bailando was the 10th biggest selling of 2014. It was huge.

ATRLers love to throw around the word "generic," but Despacito is well-produced and delivered well. There's nothing impressive about One Sweet Day. 15 hours ago, Mercurio said: How’s that racist? It’s got nothing to do with the fact it’s Spanish.I actually like the song, I just don’t think it deserves to have the record tho. I would have preferred chantaje to be in this position. Chantaje is a lot more generic than Despacito. It sounds like a demo for any reggaeton dance/pop song from J Balvin with some baby sound effects. 7 hours ago, NickARTPOP said: I mean Despacito is a very generic reggaeton song, it has been before, many many time, but for some reason this time it smashed. It's a little different. It's structured as a ballad, but changes into a urban dance/pop song. Songs like Chantaje are generic reggaeton pop songs.

I never said it wasn't; "generic" doesn't mean "bad" just like "indie/alternative/experimental" doesn't mean "good." If something is trendy or popular, odds are it's not without reason. Personally I find Despacito to be solid, but I think the point of people were trying to make is that they feel the song that breaks the record for most weeks at Number 1 ought to be something crazy spectacular, and not just something they perceive to be bland (and/or featuring Beiber since this is ATRL). Just like you don't care for One Sweet Day, some people just see this song as meh and not worthy of the record.

There's nothing special about it. I doubt people will love it next year. Its still far ahead of Wild Thoughts and that song is decling.
toewsy Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 (edited) 24 minutes ago, ChartsFan said: The ing is, for the most part, the songs that have set the record over the decades, have been bland:generic. To last that long st number one, the song needs to be tolerated by a lot of people. That means the song isn't too creative, but provides an accretive sound to the masses. Record progression: You Light Up My Life End Of the Road I Will Laways Love You Ome Sweet Day. are all well done/executed songs. But they are all not very original and certainly not uniquely sounding, especially for their time period. They all maximized by the current era trends to form broadly not despised music. Nite how I worded that, rather than broadly liked. I totally agree. I was trying to explain (evidently not well enough) the reasons why people may be upset at Despacito potentially dethroning One Sweet Day, in my opinion an excellently crafted song (from a music standpoint) and well-executed by the performers. I totally agree it's nothing experimental or new- in fact it's a little too sappy for me- but I think the difference is a lot of people are willing to forgive something that's older simply by virtue of being older. If something is perceived as a "classic," it's seemingly "above" criticism (which obviously isn't strictly true, but it's just the way art works, be it a song, painting, book, whatever). I just thought I'd add the list of songs for the record, so people could see/relate to what you said. and sappy is an excellent word, and not necessarily a negative word, that describes the lot of record holders listed. honourable mention to Bryan Adams for holding the record in other places, and fitting the listed terms. Gotcha. And yeah, not necessarily a negative, it just appeals to basic/universal human feelings and experiences to get an emotional response form the listener. Nothing original or groundbreaking by any means, but clearly effective
