Lizzo: Janet is the Queen of Pop, not Madonna

I always thought this was a subjective topic.

Regardless Janet and Madonna are the blueprints. They're both cited as inspirations by many artists for a reason.

She is right. But Madonna deserves the Queen of Pop title too. Lets not erase her history to uplift Janet. Both can exist.

She got the timeline wrong tho. When Janet popped off first it was 1986, Madonna already had two 20M+ selling albums by then :rip: so saying Madonna "grew up" on Janet is complete bs.

This was surprising to me. I know her musical knowledge goes back further than 1982.

Gurl WHAT?

Your entire reasoning is why Madonna is the Queen...and this never happened. Madonna is 10 years older than Janet so how was Madonna watching Janet on TV lmao

Janet was actress in the 70s with a famous role on Good Times but i don't know how old Madonna was in the 70s tho :thing:

Let's not throw Janet under the bus for things she didn't say. Madonna is no doubt the queen of pop but Janet was also a legend, just see her world tours sweeping all continents and she definitely is still very impactful particular to musicians cause her music is just the indie of mainstreams. That can't be argued.

I saw a video about this earlier but Lizzo is just wrong on all counts and there's no time to into it

Madonna had two #1 hits before Janet got her first top 5. Madonna had a #1 album before Janet got a top 50 album. Lizzo has lost some weight and most of her sanity, lol.

No, Madonna is the Queen of Pop.

This tired ass Madonna vs Janet feud. Both are respectable, talented and influential. However, only one has been regularly bestowed with the title for practically 30 years and hint: it's not aligned with what Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, has said.

Lily Allen on Britney: The British singer who previously covered "Womanizer," referred to Britney as a "legend" during an interview with Harper's Bazaar, according to MTV. She also reportedly called Britney the "Queen of Pop" in a since-deleted blog on her old MySpace account.

Quote

Charli XCX on Britney: "So I did get asked but I don't know if it's like… real? I went to Malibu and I wrote. And you always write songs hoping Britney's gonna record them because she's the queen of pop," she said.

Quote

Lance Bass on Britney: "This is amazing. Oh my gosh!" Lance Bass, who welcomed twins Violet Betty and Alexander James with Turchin via surrogate last month, raved. "Look, I wanted to be related to the Queen. Well now I'm related to the queen of pop!"

Quote

Dua on Kylie: "Since before I was in year three I've loved Kylie. I've loved all her songs, her music videos, she's such an icon, she's the queen," she told Australian radio station KIIS105.

I await all of your outrage. I assume you will all be just as angry at Lily, Charli, Lance, and Dua as you are at Lizzo. :cm:

If Madonna was a kid looking up on anyone on TV, those were the likes of Diana Ross, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin (as she's said herself). By the time Janet blew up, Madonna was already a force to reckon with :deadbanana4:

Impersonating? Britney is inspired by janet..not Impersonating her.

Lizzo...shut the F up

Career is in shambles, she has only 1 chance and 1 chance only. And this moo moo girl's made a flamebait for everybody to pay attention because if she talked about her new music, people'd just roll their eyes and walk away.

Oh MooMooooo

how was Janet a "pop diva" before Madonna just because she had an acting credit? how does that make her the queen of pop? lmao

My comment was about the second sentence not the first :thing:

The fact she says there were no pop divas before Janet completely invalidates wherever else she's saying.

Donna Summer, Debbie Harry, Diana Ross, all women that Madonna herself has said have been inspirations and influences.

I bet she thinks Control was Janet's debut.

I absolutely believe that Madonna and Janet are at the very least on par as artists but Janet has done literally **** all for the last 15 years, needs to tell Randy to **** off, release Black Diamond and start actually protecting and promoting her legacy. But Lizzo just seems like she wants attention.

That's why Janet didn't have any dent in the music industry until 1986, right. Madonna had been releasing music since 1982.

This is always up for debate, they are both too magnificent to compare, and in my head, they live simultaneously as the queens of pop.

There were definitely pop divas (Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Cher, etc) before Janet but Janet, especially for black female artists, opened doors that Madonna naturally couldn't. She elevated what it meant to be a black popstar, and I hate how only her brother gets that credit. Madonna is definitely a trailblazer for women as a whole in music but without Janet there would be no Britney, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ciara, Brandy, Tyla, etc. You can trace everything back to Janet just as much as Madonna. And that's just her impact in pop not R&B.

I feel like because her career and celebrity got so muted after the Superbowl people are quick to show how ignorant they are. Her imperial phase (hits, performances, videos, tours, looks) from 1986-2002 only rivals Madonna. So there's nothing crazy about anything Lizzo's saying but let the usuals who only listen to a specific type of pop music get their jokes in

As did Janet. Her first two albums were a literal flop and she didn't start gaining traction until she started taking creative control of her career and proving her worth as an artist by releasing amazing bodies of work while battling misogyny, racism and people like you undermining her because of who her brother is. Nepotism didn't get her where she is or give her the talent that made her the blueprint for multiple pop stars. Her hard work did.

I get that you're about two fries short of a happy meal, but can you start learning how to think before you speak.

Drag it :bibliahh:

Madonna is the undisputed queen of pop. However, I understand completely what Lizzo is saying here :gaynetcat1:
