Yeah I'm not trying to downplay Rih's massive legacy. I just think Gaga was a more influential artist who shifted the industry in sound and visually. Rih rode many trends successfully, but she didn't really start anything, even if we're just looking at the mainstream. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. 1
MatiRod Posted Sunday at 09:39 PM Posted Sunday at 09:39 PM Michelle Branch deserves a mention. She was the first of the post-teen pop pop rock wave which led the industry to recognizing the alt rock girl packaged as a femme pop star was a very lucrative proposition. That directly resulted in P!nk's pop rock makeover, Avril, all the pop rock girls in the 2000s, which then bled into Taylor's pop-rock-country sound and all the singer-songwriter girls of the 2010s and today. "Everywhere" started it all in June 2001. 1 1

A year before we had Somebody That I Used to Know, I Follow Rivers and Born to Die. Lorde was influential, but we're talking century here. She's not top 5. They never said alt-pop songs never existed, but "Royals" is regarded by critics and artists alike to be the song that changed pop radio. There are countless articles and videos explaining what happened. "I Follow Rivers" doesn't even come close to the exposure of "Royals". "Somebody That I Used To Know" was way more radio friendly than "Royals" at the time, and "Born To Die" is pretty much a very commercial album, plus an antithesis of 'Pure Heroine'. And almost every new pop girl has or had Lorde as one of their biggest influences, even those who never speak about her are easy to spot out. edit: and her influence is not only seen in sound, but also lyrics (themes that weren't recurrent in the pop mainstream started to get more attention after "Royals", the 'anti-pop') and musicians relationships with producer (she is acknowledge for popularizing the formula 1 singer-songwriter/1 producer that a lot of artists followed, including Olivia, Billie, Taylor, Lana etc). I mean she put Calvin Harris on the map and made his sound go mainstream with We Found Love. She massively helped Drake break out outside America with What's My Name, his first worldwide hit. She started a trend of dancehall-infused pop/R&B songs with Rude Boy & What's My Name circa 2011 when other pop girls tried to replicate that formula (JLo's "Into You" / Nicole's "Right There" / Keri Hilson's "Lose Control" / Kelly Rowland's "Lay It On Me"). She was the first pop girl to embrace the trap sound with Pour It Up back in 2012 and was a pioneer in the dance-pop trend of the late 2000s (Don't Stop The Music, SOS, Disturbia). She's undeniably in the top 5 most influential pop girls of this century and she's not #5. The fact she's been on a hiatus for nearly a decade and the new generation of pop girls cite her as an inspiration today speaks for itself. Edited 18 hours ago by istan4badgalriri 2
