Oh wow, these responses are definitely not what I expected.

 

It's really sad that Selena seems to have lost her confidence over the years, especially since she was such a captivating performer in the past. She might've never been super dance heavy, but she definitely knew how to work the stage and grab your attention.

I think Selena's situation is interesting because she was in the entertainment industry from a very young age - she was on Barney at 10, then was on Disney at about 14, and Disney likely maneuvred her from acting into music so they could enlarge her brand like they did Hilary Duff and many others - so they gave her some vocal lessons - and then she released her first album at 16 years old. And from there it was an album most years - performances and touring - and filming movies. She probably had multiple hits, albums and tours under her belt before she even really could think "what do I actually want to do?"

 

To add to that trolls online saying "I don't think she can sing" and saying she's only famous because she's lucky or pretty... a lot of people would begin to doubt themselves and whether they deserve to take up space on the charts. It's unclear how much self-doubt has affected her desire to perform but it seems it was at least a factor - I'm pretty sure she's admitted she has low self-esteem. It's unfortunate to think without internet comments she may have found the confidence to develop and improve her confidence in music despite the fact her natural aptitude toward singing may be lower than some of her contemporaries. Alas she's privelged in many ways in life such as financially but it's kinda unfortunate her desire for perfoming seems to be so low.

Honestly, it's pretty obvious she hates being a pop star and it's been apparent for a while now. She doesn't have any inherent musical talent nor the drive to improve on any of those skills.

 

I give her props for at least being self-aware enough to know that it's not her thing lol
