I think the truth is they simply grew apart as they got older. On the couple of occasions they were on screen at the MTV Awards together, that was because others wanted them to interact on screen.

 

Christina and Justin were hired to do a promotion for Sketcher's sneakers together around 20 years ago and the pic used is from that, I don't remember them dating though.
