KKCuteCat Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago Imagine to think a movie with a budget of $150 crossing more than $600M is an underperform. What the heck?

Hurem Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago All of you saying no one thought it would do $1B are deluding yourselves. It started with an incredible momentum and crossing that threshold was a possibility, but because international audiences aren't crazy about musicals or the Oz IP - it didn't fully deliver. That being said, considering its great reception, I fully expect the second part to do significantly better number overseas which will likely push it over $1B. 1 2

I honestly didn't see any real box office observers (not stans who think everything their fave does will go diamond and win an Oscar) predict this to do a billion. Musicals are just not that strong. 2

On the box office subreddit on Reddit I don't remember anyone predicting a billion and in the real world this movie is a hit especially for a musical
loveisdead9582 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago A billion was a pipe dream. As is, this is doing quite well for a musical. It's already earned well over its budget/marketing. Musicals are a bit iffy internationally so tbh it's doing about as well as it could possibly be expected to do. 1
Sad Serenade Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago ATRL has an evident obsession for flops/underperformance. How can you really call this movie a bad performance? It's doing well specially in the Netflix/streaming era when people don't really use theatres as in the past 1
ericcartman Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Who is OP a fan of. Wicked was a smash, don't be jealous. 1

I agree with everything said and tbh, the international numbers are cute so far. Not bad and it's up there with other smash musicals like ASIB and TGSM (when all is said and done, I expect the international numbers to be like $250m to $280m, including Japan - ASIB for example grossed $222m, if Wicked does like $30m to $60m more, I think we can call it a great success abroad, just like ASIB). Domestically, it's definitely performing like a huge blockbuster, so far. I guess it could end up somewhere around $450m. That and the international gross would bring it to a total estimated WW gross of $700m to $730m. Spoiler This is all just an estimation of how things could go. Who knows what could happen, will it get an award boost or how will those awards affect the film and soundtrack, merchandise etc.? Maybe they can expand the theatrical run until the middle of March, since the Oscars are being held in early March. If it over-performs in Japan and Germany and it gets an award buzz, the movie could gross even $800m. That could also just be very delusional, idk. I guess $600m to $750m, everything is possible. I don't really see it doing a lot more than that. Hopefully not much under it either. But whatever it is, the fact it will probably get the title of biggest musical broadway film adaption and already has Golden Globe and so many more award nominations and wins already is fantastic and shows how big of a success the film is.
