Yes, it may be shameful, but I have never listened to a single Mariah Carey album, and I would like to start exploring her discography. Which album should I start with?

I have vivid memories of listening to debut and Emotions. I can't describe it but her voice and background vocals and melodies are truly out of this world on those albums. You should 100% start with debut. You can still hear the 80's influence on her self titled debut album. Also her voice sounds fuller and richer than her albums from Daydream and onward.

If you want knock after knock after knock start with Emancipation. That will also be a bit more of your vibe if you've genuinely never listened. Any other album will probably bore you initially til you get her vibe.

 

I would go to Daydream second, its middle kind of sags but it also has some nice runs at the front and back half.

 

Butterfly third although it's spotty, but does contain her best song Breakdown.

But if you're looking for a general overview of her discography you can check out her #1s compilation and choose which album to explore based on your musical preferences. Her catalogue is an immersive blend of R&B, soul, dance, pop and it's definitely worth a listen

Mariah is a legend and I know that because I did this 15 years ago lol, in 2009.

 

I listened to each album from the start and kept my fave tracks.

i would start where i started which is Butterfly. Emancipation has too much screaming. 

 

Caution is also a great easy listening experience!

Butterfly is her definitive masterpiece imo. Emancipation and Daydream should come second and third, respectively. From there you can just go in order.

 

If you take the compilation route, go with #1's.
