U.S TikTok partially back after Trump's 90-day extension but ByteDance won't divest

The screengrabs are from Politico's newsletter that's a staple on the Hill.

I can look for a URL but seeing as my intentions here are going to be questioned regardless I'm not going to bother.

This is literally in the OP but I guess we're going to pretend that this is "muddled", whatever the **** that means.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy TikTok & have found a lot of entertainment & resourceful content on the app, but Shou coming through with the blatant PR for the same person who introduced this ban in the first place is absolutely corny. The amount of people I'm seeing fall for this & sing praises for Trump just gives me so little hope for what's to come, but thank goodness there are a considerable number of others still calling it out for the fakery this is.

This is basically a situation of liberals being unable to reconcile with the world as-is in front of them.

We're entering semantics of "BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!! IT *SHOULD* BE TRUMP'S FAULT!! HE *SHOULD* BE BLAMED!! THIS ISN'T HOW RULES WORK!!".

Evergreen.

We're still making this about Republicans vs Democrats and who did what now when both parties wanted it banned and now they suddenly want it to stay?

When Republicans and Democrats suddenly flip flop to agreeing with one another, does that not raise red flags for anyone?

Maybe you could argue it's because both parties are vying for popularity, but let's be honest, if Democrats cared about being popular they wouldn't have done half the things they've done in the past 4 years.

Have yall dragged J*mes Charles yet for headlining the "go trump" narrative?

Twitter is cooking Chris Murphy, US senate Democrat, for his tweet on TikTok. He was another one of the politicians that said it should be banned bc of the anti Israel rhetoric.

More people should. I cannot stand most of the disputes going on over this.

I love to lash a Democrat and I love calling out Republican hypocrisy, but people treating Tiktok like a benign and wholesome entity is just awful. Especially after whatever backend deal Trump cooked up.

As AI ramps up and powered with Tiktok's lovely algorithm, I cannot WAIT to see where we go from here.

And yeah, I do think Tiktok going is by far a net good for society. I'm so sorry to those who make a living off the app, but that's the same argument people use to justify bending over for miners and frackers in PA every election season, while our Earth cooks us alive.

Some things shouldn't have been created and shouldn't exist.

I don't even get this argument either. I see a sh*t ton of anti-Israel content on X, Reddit and IG.

Why is Tiktok the only problem? Why does this matter after Israel basically already accomplished its goals and the ceasefire is going through? Why are we not asking ourselves these questions instead of forming narratives to support our own beliefs?

This is what I am not understanding and nobody has been able to answer this question in this thread.

Okay, but brainrot apps still exist. Insta Reels, YouTube Shorts, you name it.

This isn't like abolishing mining. It's like closing one specific mine because the miners keep saying mean things about the governor, and forcing the owner to sell it to one of the governor's friends.

Because their algorithm's not run by the U.S. and the difference in volume and numbers in contrast. The tweets below are from a Zionist to make the opposite point, but the charts have been floating around a while.

I agree, but I'd rather see the biggest and most effective one gone even if we can't get the rest out.

And it actually is exactly like banning mining because mining isn't the only thing that hurts the environment. There's still tons of other industries that harm the environment, but at least getting rid of a big one like fracking would help.

@Relampago. Why is AIPAC and the ADL bothering to lobby senators to get rid of TikTok and not the other social media sites that you mentioned?

Why else would they do that?

But what is this in comparison to other social media?

But we're not getting rid of an industry, we're getting rid of a specific company. The "brainrot industry" still exists. Hell, if Congress had its way, TikTok itself would still exist, but be owned by Zuckerberg or whatever.

So then anti-Zionist propaganda is okay as long as it's US made?

And if this is the case… why is our zionist loving government now fighting so hard to bring it back suddenly?

I'm really not trying to be intentionally obtuse or a tin-foil conspirator but this is just not adding up at all to me. I don't trust anything about it.

Not Gen-Z saying 'thank you' to the fascist orange clown when he wanted to ban the App in the first place :deadbanana4: This World is f***ing done, I swear.

@Vermillion This video largely does go over the timeline of why banning TikTok came back up as an issue of concern In 2023.

(I never heard before the Nikki Haley quote of "for every 30 minutes a user spends on TikTok, they become 17% more antisemitic" lfgnbkjfgn)

A speed-run of the dates and timeline cited below:

  • August 2020 - Trump signs EO ordering ByteDance to divest from TT in 45 days citing natural security concerns
  • October 2020 - Federal judge grants ByteDance's preliminary injunction delaying Trump's EO from taking effect
  • November 2020 - Joe Biden defeats Donald Trump in the presidential election
  • --
  • January 2021 - Joe Biden takes office
  • June 2021 - Joe Biden signs EO effectively undoing Trump's original EO ordering ByteDance to divest from TikTok
  • ---
  • October 2023 - 10/07 and Israel invasion into Gaza occurs
  • November 2023 - Audio is leaked of ADL head saying Israel has an optics problem on TikTok and something needs to be done to address it
  • November 2023 - Republican candidates at the Trump-free primary debate call for banning TikTok, citing false study by a Zionist tech executive claiming TikTok fuels antisemitism in the US
  • December 2023 - 40+ tech executives send letter to the CEO of TikTok over alleged antisemitism on the platform and the popularity of pro-Palestinian videos
  • ---
  • March 2024 - Rep. Mike Gallagher (R) (WI-8) introduces legislation H.R. 7521 claiming ByteDance poses a security risk to American national security. This legislation is written with the help of Jacob Helberg, a self-identified Zionist and consultant for the Peter Thiel-owned defense contractor Palantir.
  • March 2024 - Jewish Federations of North America endorse H.R. 7521, calling for its passing, claiming TikTok proliferates antisemitism as a platform
  • March 2024 - H.R. 7521 is passed in the House with bipartisan support (Yes - 155 D, 197 R, No - 50 D, 15 R).
  • April 2024 - Senate passes their version of H.R. 7521 and the bill is signed into law the next day by Joe Biden.
  • April 2024 - Rep. Mike Gallagher resigns from the House as a representative.
  • May 2024 - Rep. Mike Gallagher announces he will be the new executive Head of Defense for weapons contractor Palantir.
  • May 2024 - Sen. Mitt Romney at a forum with the McCain Institute featuring Sec. of State Anthony Blinken attributes the fast pace passing of the bill to force ByteDance to divest from TikTok to the "overwhelming amount of pro-Palestinian videos on the platform" and why the idea to ban it was so popular in Congress.
