Manchester United scrapped plans to wear pride-themed warm-up jackets as part of the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign after defender Noussair Mazraoui refused to participate, citing his religious beliefs, according to The Athletic.

Rainbow Devils, Manchester United's official LGBTQ+ supporters club, expressed their  "great disappointment" after plans to wear the specially designed Adidas jackets before the match against Everton on Sunday were abandoned at the last moment.

The Rainbow Devils had worked with United on a number of projects around inclusivity and the support of the LGBTQ+ community in the lead up to the club's official Rainbow Laces game at Old Trafford, but the group said they were informed that the jackets would not be worn because "one of the squad refused".

The Athletic reported that Mazraoui, who is Muslim, declined to wear the warm-up tracksuit due to his faith and the rest of the United squad decided that no one would wear the jacket so the Morocco international would not be the only member of the team seen without it. The Athletic's report said some United players were not happy with the decision.

If you consider the LGBTQ+ movement as a religion then it makes sense.

It's unfortunate, but I guess it is what is is.

Sam Morsy of Ipswich Town also didn't wear it due to his Islamic faith. Also, Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace wrote "I love Jesus" and "Jesus loves you" on his rainbow armband. When he was asked what it meant, he gave a BS answer about "it was about inclusivity".

His dad (who's a pastor) said in an interview earlier today that it goes against their Christian faith, so that's why they couldn't support it.

"If you look at what the LGBT community are doing, they are trying to impose on others what they believe in, it's belief against belief, but at the end of the day everyone has the right to an opinion"

The irony of reigious people continuing to say LGBT+ lifestyles are "ungodly" when every religion has been caught covering up same-sex abuse is not lost on me :matty:

Mazraoui was the only player from Manchester United who refused to wear the jacket.

His teammates decided they didn't want Mazraoui to be the only person who didn't wear it, so they decided that none of them would wear the jacket.

Nnnnn I think they didn't want him to feel like the odd one out, but by not wearing the jackets, the team somehow made themselves look worse :toofunny2:

Society is regressing on lgbt rights and it seems to only continue. I was shocked reading these comments on twitter about this.

This should be concerning.

Gooners is the name of the club's fanbase. GayGooners is a community of queer fans that are a fixture in the stadium and has always been supported by the club.
