The guys is clearly smart as ****. Is absolutely aware he is a hot (!!!!!!!!!!!!) boy from an educated & cultured (white) family, with this sort of rags to riches story. Also not to mention...was a aware of the large footprint he was leaving behind all over the internet. People found his Goodreads in like 5 seconds. His credentials are all over the place, the valedictorian speech, etc. 

 

I don't mean to give TOO much credit to a legit murderer, but I feel he made the calculation in his head: "if ANYONE is gonna do something so brazen, it'll have to be me." Probably saw himself as a sort of vessel for this "mission," which would have some extra cushion if/when he got caught.

 

And you know what, he might be right if the court of public opinion is anything to go by
