Insurance industry pressured DOJ to charge Luigi Mangione federally to deter copycats

My Spidey senses are beginning to tingle about the way the media is reporting all of this, particularly the response from people. I wouldn't be surprised if this is used as some sort of progenitor for revised social media/internet c̶e̶n̶s̶o̶r̶s̶h̶i̶p̶ terms of use. I'm seeing it heading in that direction for some reason.

To be honest, I think they'll probably try this again when all their executives beef up their security details and this whole thing is less in the public conversation. Their blaming the public perception of their change in plans on "misinformation" just means to me that this is something they aren't taking off the table forever.

For what it's worth, from what I've read, this policy change was actually designed to close a loophole allowing for surprise billing and overbilling imposed on patients by anesthesiologists (already the most overpaid medical specialty and especially known for engaging in dubious billing practices), and followed guidance from Medicare. So in other words this policy change was supposedly not yet another case of insurance trying to scale back coverage.

Take this with a grain of salt though, I'm certainly no insurance expert.

This means they have no idea what to do next

I'm gonna assume that's not the case. At this point, given the highly publicized nature of the case, the HQ photos (some of which probably haven't been released to the public yet), and the fact that we already live in a quasi-surveillance state, I have to assume they probably do know who he is and his approximate whereabouts but they don't want to tip him off until they know they've got him cornered.

That's not my desired outcome of course, but :michael:

I truly hope the individual/entity behind this did it for a purposeful reason that is not of corporate interest. It would make it easier to rationalize tbh.

I am having a hard time seeing all the posts celebrating a killing. I know millions have suffered as a result of an institution HE enabled and pushed, but it still feels dark and weird.

I can't help but feel we are entering a new era, where assassinations and "revolt" will become normalized, which has not been the case for decades in America. Publicly supported killings is…. a different level and I am trying to come to terms with it despite agreeing with the intention. Confusing times

i'm thinking this is
a. rich on rich crime (corporate stuff)

b. a way to crack down on internet freedom "see what happens when you can advocate for violence?"
The message on the bullet with the deny/depose whatever seems so cliche, like a protagonist at the end of the movie confronting the villain.
I mean which "vigilante" has fake ids and silencers? I mean it could be a vigilante but I doubt it...

Idk stress and sadness. I think it is reasonable to feel unsettled when people in your community are saying things like "good thing this man was killed"

I don't enjoy seeing that side of people, especially friends. I am not a twitter troll, I don't stoop to that level– wishing death, etc. NOR do I surround myself with people who do.

So forgive me but the escalation in celebrating a man's DEATH feels like a lot. The feelings behind it are valid but people are getting comfortable with some reallyyy scary rhetoric

The vet gun used to kill animals, the monopoly money, the bullet casings. I can't wait for the movie to come out already. We need the screenwriters to get to work already cas someone cast Jake Gyllenhaal immediately!

I get that but what you also have to kind of look at is that he kinda did the same. Every investor meeting where he touted the profits of company and the room clapped - the same thing. Just more socially acceptable because of the capitalistic nature of America. So to be honest. He had it coming.

I think it's terrible the way the America had socialism wiped out from its culture by J. Edgar Hoover back in the day. That did not benefit the working classes of America in the longterm.

I think the American people should turn away from late stage capitalism, unionise in their places of employ and embrace peace and free love once more - only this time weaponise that love by covertly neutralising any symbol of late stage capitalism whenever and wherever they can.

I'm on the side of the shooter.

your response is valid but also are you feeling stressed and sad when millions die due to not getting appropriate access to healthcare while this company made 32 billion in profit just last year? i do not wish death on anyone and i would never encourage violence AND at the same time i'm also not gonna cry for this man...

We're not celebrating that this specific man was shot. It's just what he represents.

It's a classic "hero defeats villain" situation.
