ChandlerBing Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Do you think we will see the day when Taylor Swift's lead single debuts outside of top 20? 2 9
Brooklyn Baby Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Yes. Her downfall is imminent. 20 years from now 1
Doctor Dick Posted November 13 Posted November 13 I mean at some point her popularity will lose steam. You have to remember Gaga would've debuted in the Top 20 had her team released the video and physicals on first day and in the first week. If Taylor loses steam and her team does a roll-out like Gaga's with a song that the GP doesn't like it might as well. But Taylor will most likely never bomb like Katy tho.
NEX Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Anything could happen. Madonna went from having a #1 with Music lead single to #37 peaking American Life lead single. But Madonna took enormous risks and at some point it was too much for the gp to handle. Taylor plays it super safe and super strategic, and in the current streaming age she's less dependent on radio to just outright flop between huge eras. So it will take a while for her to cool down. 2
Popular Post DevilsRollTheDice Posted November 13 Popular Post Posted November 13 No, according to Harvard Taylor's whiteness prevents this from happening. Gaga is Italiax and Katy is still under Taylor's curse that even Taylor herself wasn't powerful enough to undo. 15
MP3 Posted November 13 Posted November 13 If Taylor's flop moment means performing at the Olympics, having a #1 featuring hit, making a fan-loved song and video and being part of highly polaziring movie then flopping is not that bad after all 4 2 2
$ebert Posted November 13 Posted November 13 When she gets older. People will slowly forget about her, most of her fanbase is pretty young so they will be moving on. Ageism is a thing…unfortunately.
Cruel Summer Posted November 13 Posted November 13 I don't think there's an equivalence between where Gaga is and where Katy is at. Anyway, if Taylor ever stops being a prominent force on the charts, it's probably going to be at a time in her career when that's expected, natural, and gradual. I suspect that in terms of singles, we'll begin to see that soon after the close of the Eras tour and the re-recordings - and some may argue we've already sort of started to see that, though Fortnight's stats are plenty solid. In terms of albums, though, like reaching the point that 143 is at? I'm not actually, honestly certain that's ever going to happen. I think that if she becomes a legacy act, she'll be the kind of legacy act who can still secure an easy #1 album for as long as she cares to do so. 8
l3disko Posted November 13 Posted November 13 once her face starts wrinkling up like a raisin and her hunchback starts becoming more noticeable, yes. ageism is a killer in the industry.
wulmite Posted November 13 Posted November 13 i hope so, i need her to get humbled so she can go back to making good music again the last two albums were garbage 1
Nando_05 Posted November 13 Posted November 13 I Can see her having a Gaga year in 2042 or 2043 (a MASSIVE SMASHand some flops). But i can't see her flopping like Katy. No one can do worse than Katy Perry. She has the worst comeback of all time
lovely88 Posted November 13 Posted November 13 No one stays on top forever but her core fanbase will always be there.
Gorjesspazze9 Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Too big to flip. Probably underperform if she keeps pumping out content. But not anytime in the next decade. Lol
Archetype Posted November 13 Posted November 13 (edited) Gaga still smashes when she flops so I would say Taylor can only hope to flop like that eventually instead of outright flopping into complete oblivion overnight like other artists. Edited November 13 by Archetype 3
kimberly Posted November 13 Posted November 13 she has a long, looong while to go from TTPD's opening week of 2.5 million album units to opening with under 100k. I could see a career pause being detrimental for her, if, say, she decided to step aside and start a family etc for 5+ years. but I really don't see her doing that (even if she had a kid)? she certainly loves being a celebrity too much to ever let go like that, in my opinion. Joe Alwyn's cocooned-off lifestyle barely worked for her during a global pandemic.
T.O.A.D.S. Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Taylor doesn't take risks so she probably won't flop like Gags and Katy. And Taylor's calculated system of dating a new ugly man each year and writing albums about them is too lucrative to switch things up… 1 1 2
AbracaMartin Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Didn't she almost flop with "Lover" (for her standards)? 1

Putting out a solo female song would be an example of a risk, like both Gags and Katy have recently undertaken. Difference in outcome of taking the risk doesn't invalidate the risk I fear
MCMXCV Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Will Gaga ever flop like Katy? No. To say their careers are in the same place is just pure cope from Katy stans like the OP. 1
Kiss It Better Posted November 13 Posted November 13 critics wise, yes she can flop like Katy (see TTPD mc scores decline) but overall success wise? no 1

It's been very clear over the years that she's very inspired and drawn to songwriting when she has to process impactful events in her life, and motherhood would be one of the most impactful thing she could experience. I mean, she made a 31-tracks album inspired by a two-months long relationship (that she idealized in the back of her mind since 2015 but still). Imagine what having a child would generate. And yeah, she also very clearly loves being a celebrity and being the center of attention. But that's something I could see her get tired of as the years go by. I don't think that would stop her from releasing music in the folklore/evermore-style (in terms of promotion, not music style necessarily) though. OT: No, I don't think she'll ever flop on the level of what Katy and Gaga have been doing (especially the former, because Gaga despite shaky solo success can still find success in collabs), or at least not before she's at least 30+ years into her career, at which point I don't think it can even be considered a true flop (because to me a flop is relative to expectations, and expectations for someone 30+ years into their career are already extremely low). I don't think that would stop her from releasing music in the folklore/evermore-style (in terms of promotion, not music style necessarily) though. sure, but I meant more from a timing perspective. if she went the Rihanna route, say, and took a few years off, then extended it to have a kid, then extended it even more to grow her family more, etc. and somehow went 7-8 years without any album released. if her values or priorities changed somehow. I could see the no-promo album drops, but it's also entirely possible that she decides to process and cherish things herself before announcing to the entire world. as you said, motherhood can really change people and I'm sure it would also change how Taylor, as a business, operates. I don't really see this working for Taylor, but we're not her, so we'll never truly know. she might not even be interested in motherhood. so we have to make up a lot of conditional statements to even fabricate a scenario where she might have a commercial collapse. OT: no.
