Girl there's literally nothing to backfire here it's not even that deep. Only backfiring thing is this dumb ass argument. OP was talking about Lana. You were talking about Lana. I was talking about Lana. Then suddenly you made it about an album cover at beach. Then someone else used the term "sex sells". Make it make sense. Stop using the words "as usual" too, because that's not the case. Also you're using alternative cover arts on your comparison which doesn't make sense, plus Ocean Blvd is also a lazy cover art, so I don't get what upgrade you're talking about there. We need artist to invest more into album photoshoots again. I know people don't care as much for them but for me they are a defining part of an album and can actually add to my overall liking of the musical content. Same for videos

first one (aka the best cocc cover by miles) was a red vinyl fnac/hmv exclusive shot by legend Neil Krug ! taken from the album photoshoot : 

 

 

second one (iirc) was a very limited store exclusive cover that came out a while after the album release  fully agree that it did the group pic concept so much better than whatever the lazy standard cover was

They do need to try harder. I'd rather have one really good cover than 5 variants which are all zero effort. 

 

IMO Pink Friday 2 is a great example of an album with many high quality covers of which all are beautiful, but that is sadly a rarity nowadays. I kinda blame Taylor for catapulting these low effort album covers into popularity with folklore.

I feel like because it's so easy to switch them out later on on streaming if you don't like them (like Rina did, or Britney's team did for Glory) and the pressure to create a bunch of stupid ******* variants for vinyls, that album art has become less "permanent."

 

When there's less of a critical need to "get it right" the first time and the opportunity for a bunch of alternate versions anyway it's easy to not care as much, leading to bad/simple covers.
