GraceRandolph Posted October 31 Posted October 31 It seems like film and music is fairly stale, at least in the mainstream. I'm seeing my fave release a song like Die With a Smile and it skyrockets to the top of the charts yet songs like 911, Disease, Replay, and others don't gain traction. Rebecca Black released Crumbs and likewise saw no traction, despite a cool sound and real artistic growth. It seems like the GP has largely settled for a fast food version of everything. Films are all IP/franchise related that make a billion dollars and the highest grossing films every year are dominated by these types of films, when in the past there was a much richer variety and more adult focused storytelling could catch on. It feels like we're in cultural stasis across all mediums and nothing can break through the monotony. 1 2 5

Illuminati Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Idk what to say, be the change you want to see. I liked DWAS and Happy Mistake 2
Arrows Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Explain how is 911, Disease and Replay are somehow the opposite of "fast food" music I actually like them well enough but they're as basic as pop music gets 4 1 1 1

Why can't Perfect Stranger by FKA Twigs smash? Our imagination seems so limited.
Venice B Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Can we stop pretending Gaga is some experimental, avant garde artist? Ever since the beggining she has made nothing but mainstream pop music (apart from her jazz albums, of course) and Disease it's nothing but a bland pop song. Yes, the GP's taste is very questionable, but it's not because Lady Gaga is flopping. 2 10 2 1
Mupps Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Marvel, McDonald's, Taylor swift… all fall into the same category. Basic but very palatable products are always going to be consumed en masse Big radio stations are not going to play the more experimental stuff unless it already gained traction elsewhere. Pleasant and familiar with big names attached is the reason why DWAS got so big so quick with the gp. Not talking down on these products…just the way the gp works 5
Raphy23 Posted October 31 Posted October 31 GP is simply over 10+ years of overproduced music. There are exceptions like Charli's BRAT, but for the most part this more raw/stripped version of mainstream music with actual instruments is a breath of fresh air. 3

Do we still need MCU, Transformers and James Bond ****?

Plenty of mainstream "raw/stripped" music can still be "overproduced" or poorly mastered. 2

Gaming and anime have had some of the best releases in over a decade, and anime and other genres of music outside your America and britpop bubble have been good too… 1

We shouldn't have to look to other cultures or the fringe to find quality entertainment. It should be mainstream and abundant.
