Do people calling this a vendetta over a tweet realize they scored her last album with a 7 after that and that they changed most of the staff including the editor-in-chief? Maybe they just didn't like it.

if they hadn't like it, that would be fine tbh. but the content of the review is offensive and disgusting and crosses a line in a way that i'm actually shocked they let this be published. how in the world can someone discredit the experiences someone had with life threatening diseases that almost costed their own life. it feels unprofessional and wrong all around.

this is quite possibly the most nasty and mean spirited piece pitchfork has ever put out. they spend a good part of the review accusing her of playing the victim, which is insane, knowing the girl was literally on the blink of death. just insensible asf.

its disgusting, I dont know what Halsey did that even having cancer doesn't make her deserving of even the slightest piece of compassion

Half of that review is victim blaming, another half is attacking the impersonator concept, which is ridiculous. Who tf cares that a Fiona Apple "tribute" doesn't sound just like Fiona Apple song? Who said that it should? Aaliyah "impersonating" track only has a sort of similar sample, because it's not about imitation, it's just a fun concept god

Pitchfork's veneer of progressiveness really shows its cracks with reviews like this, and their true nature, which hasn't changed much since Liz Phair's 0.0 review came out, reveals its ugly muzzle. If they dislike you for some reason, they won't even try to be fair and won't hesitate to use misogyny against you. Many such cases, but this one is particularly egregious. The point of this album definitely flew over their heads, and they seem to have this biased idea of who Halsey as an artist is (or should be), which isn't necessarily true.

They wanna be contrarian for no reason since everybody else have praised the album to high heavens and rightfully so.

This specific reviewer is always nasty as hell, he really shouldn't be getting all the work that he does. Granted getting clicks is probably entirely the point in the era of dying journalism, so they probably tell him to be gross. Good job I guess

In this case, they're right.

The lyrics are a juvenile faux-deep mess. Its sonically uninteresting save for a few songs here and there. For all that dress up she did as promo the album is mediocre and brings nothing to the table.

Its sad what she is going through with her health issues but that doesn't mean everyone has to magically pretend this album is some kind of genius masterpiece. Sorry.

Honestly i don't blame them. Her tweet cut to the jugular. Wishing destruction of property that can directly main people on a very public platform is not something i'd forget easily either. She thought she was on top of the world and now that she's not so invisible, they're getting their lick back. That's showbiz!

Looking up his name and viewing his pictures gives me wanna be indie Regina George.

I suspect he is a member of ATRL.

you know another thing I REALLY don't get about this review is that why are they kind of putting off Alex G's influence on the music? hate to burst their bubble, but the songs produced/co-written by him have his fingerprints all over them, and are all the better for it :gaycat5:

Ever since Pitchfork has new chief their reviews has been all over the place. Imaginal Disk - praised in every publication, highest rated album on rym. P4k score? 7.6. The lowest of them all.

Ice Spice's already forgotten album - 7.8 :deadbanana4: Halsey review - full of misogyny and victim blaming + bad journalism cause the songs were never supposed to sound like their inspirations but it seemed like that was the main critique. And other publications praised the album to heavens.
And that list goes on and on this year. Please just close this stupid website already

Yeah no, that was just a tweet from many years ago and you know Pitchfork is actually not based in the basement and it won't actually collapse

? Imaginal Disk was rated lower by other publications — Sputnik Music gave it a 3.0/5, for my money a more accurate score (and I say this as someone who thought their debut was a 5/5 and have been listening to Mag Bay since 2019). Getting bent out of shape over a 7.7 — not even that far from the overall average — is silly

Moreover, all this pearl-clutching over Pitchfork giving a low review is hilarious, as though being mean-spirited wasn't their whole schtick for well over a decade. Need I remind you all of this review, this one, or of course this classic?? It would be naive to believe that Pitchfork is returning to its roots, but I personally welcome critics being, well, critical again. Poptimism and stan culture have ruined the medium. Everyone's too nice now.

So? Their HQ is at the world trade centre. The implication remains the same.

? Did you mean to quote me? I didn't say anything even remotely outlandish.

All I'm saying is that music critics are so scared of panning anyone except the easiest targets (eg Ed Sheeran) because they're too afraid of getting death threats from stans or accused of bigotry and it's been quite detrimental to honest music journalism. This shift has been especially stark for a publication like Pitchfork, whose whole bread and butter used to be being considerably harsher than the median publication. Sorry to anyone who can't handle their faves constantly being mollycoddled by every major outlet, but not every album deserves a 7.4+
