Pop girls come and go.

Cyndi Lauoer, Janet Jackson, Cher, Paula Abdul, etc...

there will always be a new generation of successful celebrities, and eventually they will also have a career slowdown as well.

Reputation (2017) - 4,711,356

DSAM (2017) - 4,633,476

Lover (2019) - 6,692,833

WWAFAS (2019) - 4,418,025

Folklore (2020) - 5,358,800

HTE (2021) - 3,522,478

Not this number of songs bullshit when Billie is struggling to keep up with Taylor's respective releases as an artist who debuted a whole decade after her.

You really thought

  I have been waiting for the next big teen sensation who will slot in younger than Olivia and Tate.

Not "the lakes" being the reason behind Folklore and HTE's 2M daily gap... :dancehall:

DSAM's 9 tracks actually do 3M, i just felt very generous to add Lovely to it so she could have something but she still failed me...

Also hard to think if 5 tracks difference would explain the gap between Lover and WAFFLES when Lover's top 4 most streamed tracks are outstreaming the whole WAFFLES daily... :foxaylove3:

Talking of Reputation, the comeback album which ended up as her 8th biggest album, is on track to surpass Billie's biggest album with 1M units gap going down and down each passing day. A massive comeback that has more than 77k streaming difference in itself... :whistle2:

I couldn't agree more that HMHAS is carrying her back catalogue hard with BOAF improving her track average while doing 20% of her overall daily streams tho. So let's hope that it doesn't end up like WAFFLES and we are not back to the days a 2014 album outstreams all albums by an artist that debuted 3 years after itself... :dancehall2:

But let's be clear that all those don't take anything from the biggest Gen-Z act of her generation, it is just hard to compete with the biggest artist of the century and that's totally OK

Oh wow :clap3:

I think it's just a natural evolution in the industry. Artists often reach a point where they either stagnate, step back from the industry, or shift focus to another career, such as selling products, acting, etc. After over 10-15 years, many artists start focusing on family, a calmer life, or other interests instead of staying in the spotlight. They don't promote as much as they used to, and while strong fanbases keep them successful for a while, if they stop touring, their albums usually fade and get replaced by new releases.

Not to sound ageist, but age does play a role here. The primary demographic consuming music has always been younger—typically 15-25 years old. It's natural for them to be drawn to music that reflects their experiences made by ppl closer to their age, and they generally listen to much more music than older audiences. Spotify reports that 18-34-year-olds make up 55% of their users, and this age group also is the one that purchases more physical music. Older listeners, of course, still enjoy music, but with work, family responsibilities, and less free time, they often can't engage with music in the same way.

Katy Perry is 40, Lady Gaga 38, Beyoncé 43, Rihanna 36, and Adele 36 (not struggling to fill anything btw, she did a 10-night run shows there for more than 730,000 fans, she simply doesn't care to invest more in her career). Many of them have taken time off to focus on family and other ventures, which is a natural evolution. Taylor Swift will soon be 35. She extended her appeal to younger generations through her image and lyrics, but she's starting to see a gradual shift in interest as well. Dua Lipa at 29, Ariana at 31, SZA is 34 (almost 35) are also begging that transitional stage imo.

The artists you mentioned smashing now are between 21 and 26 yo. If you look back, these same ages were when most of the previously mentioned artists were at the top of their careers often producing their best work at that time. The normal pattern in the music industry has always been for each generation of artists to dominate for a few years before making way for the next generation. It's a cycle that's been part of the industry for as long as it's existed.

EDIT: just adding that despite this Gaga has a Smash hit with DWAS and Beyonce had it too with Texas hold 'em, they just don't invest more in tv performances and other promotion, but it's not like their careers are over, just slowed down a bit because they are at a stage they can do that

Katy extremely panned album, no hits, all singles bombed.

Gaga panned movie, bombing lead single, extremely shaky start.

Beyoncé album OUT, lead single OUT, going viral on TikTok for all the WRONG reasons

Taylor no HITS, TTPD overshadowed by all her younger peers, last two TVs scrapped, career in shambles

Rihanna RIHtired, no new music in sight

Adele struggling to fill butts in seats in Munich... oh wow.

Meanwhile:

Sabrina MEGA SMASHING

Olivia being the Touring Artist Of The Year

Billie SMASH SMASH SMASH

Chappell being the biggest success story in modern times

Dua... I'm purposefully avoiding mentioning her to not get dragged but Houdini is a hit!

What's happening? Are our 2000s MPGs officially over for good? Is it time to say goodbye to them?

Noticed that Ms. Ponytail is wasn't mentioned, as you should! Dua and Ari are killing it!

And who's smashing from the new girls besides Billie and Sabrina? Sabrina is replicating a 2010s pattern of a massive pop era so good for her but Billie, while huge obviously, went #1 zero times in 2024. Back in the 00-10s, you had multiple massive eras happening simultaneously and they all somehow managed to snatch plenty of weeks atop the charts and had their moment to shine.

Some of you just say anything at this point :ahh:

15M albums sold in the US in 2024 so far (her best year), TTPD will end the year with 7M in the US but go off :dies:

this lol. Taylor has secured herself a mega succesful career for at least into her early 40s. These ppl are delusional about the status of Taylor's career. they dont get that the work she did from 2020-2024 has essentially secured her relevency for the next 5 years without a doubt. Her next two original records will for sure do well commercially. After that, we dont know but to act like she is going to struggle because she is 35 is ridiculous. Taylor is going to be one of those few rare cases of female artists who will extend their career past what is usually allocated to female artists. Very few have done it and everything is indicating that Taylor is going to be among them.
