Do you think Sam Smith destroyed their image with the Gloria era?

You have to have some sort of sex appeal to pull off sex! And I'll leave that there.

This is what @Joshneeds to understand.

And it took her 7 years to fix her reputation.

But Sam case is more similar to Miley. Overly vulgar behavior. It took her years and years to claw her way back to the publics good graces and even today, she did not fully succeed yet. Proof: everything post flowers tanked.

I'm gonna guess it was a lot more than just the puking incident that harmed Gaga's reputation in totality, though.

As for point #2, I mean, that also implies Miley was ever going to have this major Madonna-esque career when it could also be that she simply didn't have the chops or the direction.

They don't have the range to pull off what they were trying to do visually but the music I heard was hot. They're fine.

Yes. Sam made a devil's deal to get a #1 hit but sacrificed their reputation, dignity and career in return.

I think they must have anticipated pushback but the only damaging thing from that era was Unholy, everything else sorta went under the radar

Nah. I don't like their overtly sexy (borderline weird) image, but they can release a perfect pop ballad and I will listen. Their voice is just too great and one great song can do wonders.

Yeah Sam comes across like a clown now

there's sexy and then there's trashy, disgusting and weird. and sam is the latter

everytime i saw their weird overly sexual gimmicks against my will it made me want to file a restraining order

It depends on what they want to do with their career going forward.

If they want to continue with the same music as the Gloria era, then they're fine, but if they're looking to pivot back to the type of music on their first two albums, then yeah, good luck.

i went to Sam's concert and it was very good but all the vibes & looks alienated the whole audience.

it's too much and it didn't work. didn't fit, didn't look good and on top of all of that the vibes weren't vibing.

so despite the fact that i still had a great time at their concert cuz of talent + catalogue, yes, it destroyed their image.

Unholy plus collabing with that certain individual ruined it.

If they go back to the "Stay with me" look and music yes, people will tune in, for sure. However, yes, i would  say their image was affected by the "sexy" persona he tried to be.

They were vulgar during their last era and that turned off even the gays

I wouldn't say that it totally destroyed the entire career, but it pushed away a good part of the audience.

Apart from unholy, most of the songs were below average and the gimmicks had 0 impact.

Diamonds is an example that Sam Smith is capable of doing a good pop song, but unfortunately this era went unnoticed and I don't know how them will be able to reverse the damage that "Gloria" caused.

Probably. I think transphobia and fatphobia played a part, but also the execution of what they were trying to do was just terrible. I mean come on :rip:

I had somehow managed to forget this latex buttplug monstrosity look existed. They need to fire their stylist immediately and hire someone much better.
