The movie itself critiques how the music industry values appearance over talent, and that's why Ally's looks are integral to the story. that's precisely why Ally/Gaga is presented as ugly lol Oh please spare us the "huh?" you knew exactly what you were doing using that word. 4 1 1

Nor is Ally presented as being ugly? Ally's arc revolves around her being a normal person (natural girl-next-door type) with major talent suddenly skyrocketing in fame, and gradually being pushed more and more from being a raw singer-songwriter into a big pop star. Jackson Maine feels resentful and jealous over her success as he flounders in addiction, and her forced artistic shift is part of what makes him question her career, and further underscores the rift in their relationship. 8 1

But the story also touches on Ally/Gaga's struggles with insecurities. Gaga herself has always dealt with issues regarding her appearance, and that reflects in the character's journey as for your point about Ally not being presented as ugly, i remember an interview where Gaga mentioned she almost cried reading a script that referred to her character as 'ugly' or something similar. So...

Todd struggles with sequels. Look at Hangover 2. Gaga is a Best Actress nominee who won major critics awards for Gucci. I'll trust her over a Charisma Carpenter stan. 1
