ATRL Moderator MissedTheTrain Posted October 14 ATRL Moderator Posted October 14 I think a lot of you are missing the point that she was being honored with the Woman of the Decade award and was asked to make a speech. She was talking about her experience in the business and how there are certain things females have to deal with that males don't, since the event was literally Billboard Women in Music. Something Taylor has been guilty of throughout her career, as she says in the speech, is overcorrecting to appease her critics. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse: -When Fearless blew up, there were critics saying she was likely a label created manufactured artist and wasn't actually the one writing her songs...so she wrote the next album by herself. -When she got flack for her dating life, she went the other direction and was marketing herself during 1989 as "I'm single and happy, I love hanging out with my friends!" (Which she admitted a few years later was a little much) -Not included in her speech, the overall art direction/branding of Lover and the existence of songs like ME! were pretty clearly an attempt at going the other direction when she felt like people weren't into the darker vibes on reputation. A lot of the flack she's gotten in her career is pretty exclusive to women, and other female artists face the same things. Thankfully, as she said in the speech, she's started to learn to not do those things quite as much anymore. She's human and she's a people pleaser so she still does from time to time, but not to the extent that she used to thankfully. It's pretty clear to see that a Taylor Swift album campaign looks very different post-Lover than it did for any of her albums prior and she's kind of doing what she wants these days. All of that aside....this speech was five years ago. And it got a great response at the time! This random thread to bash it is truly something. 5

Matchatea Posted October 14 Posted October 14 The worst thing about this video is Jameela in the background…. she didn't say anything wrong tbh, she had a point and I remember how the media treated her at times. Taylor can be criticized sure? But I don't see this speech being problematic at all. 3

Yeah, the 1989 pause was awkward but that's really it. Obviously she was going to talk about herself and her career. She was accepting "Woman of the Decade". Why would she not talk about her own career. People are dumb. it's the way in which she talks about her own career, rewriting history like she's some kind of victim 1

Watching this really gets you wondering if she ever cared about anything other than herself "Too egocentric" in a speech she was asked to give for being awarded Women of the Decade, open the schools omg 1
Red Velvet Posted October 14 Posted October 14 I get the message she was trying to convey: you can never please certain people. The delivery just didn't work 2
BadHabits Posted October 14 Posted October 14 21 hours ago, JJZAW said: Woman of the Decade award should've gone to someone who's actually a girl's girl / woman's woman I just watched the whole speech and she praiseed Billie and a bunch of female artists and talked about making environments more safe for women in music who are singers, songwriters behind the scenes, engineers and ones in A&R and label meetings who don't have the power she has.
Titanbaddie Posted October 15 Posted October 15 What is most annoying about her is that while some of these critiques may have been said it wasn't stopping her from being the most awarded and commercially successful act in the world. People calling you corny because you are corny didn't stop you from taking home AOTY 4 times. She's exhausting. 1

The pause after saying 1989 was awkward. (This isn't meant to be a hate comment btw. Taylor was right, but she needed to work on the speech more) Ya it's giving that Lover pitch to the label in her documentary. No one moved (it's a business meeting) until her mom started clapping and she says something like "thanks mom that's what I was looking for" so the employees awkwardly start clapping too. Like it's a professional event not a concert speech.

Rihinvention Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Her haters can say "omfg this is SO cringe lol" all they want. It won't change the fact that her millions of fans ate this up. It anything, this speech (along with re-records) helped her brand The Eras Tour, especially for younger/newer fans. People ate this up, so I don't get why anyone's laughing about it. It contributed to making her the richest woman in music — and all of the money actually came *from* music, which in 2024, is insane.
Enrique523 Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Threads and "viral" tweets like this is exactly why i will never take Taylor haters seriously. This constant habit of hating anything she does not matter what is not normal, and all of that just because online losers can't stand how successful she is. Especially when you have to go back to a speech she made 5 years ago, how desperate can you be? Are you THAT bored? A lot of OTHS need serious therapy, and i'm 100% serious. It's not normal to hate someone like that for no reason, especially when she's one of the least problematic pop star in the industry. But when all is said and done her legacy will speak for itself, no one will remember the DEMENTED army of losers attacking her for simply breathing.

Like we had Gaga risking her entire persona to go all out for LGBT with practically her whole career, Beyonce sticking her neck out for racial injustices, and even just the girls like Britney or Ari adding their ingredients to the Pop girl storybook for the girls later on and this woman here thinks she is doing some game changing moves just because it is SLIGHTLY different for her very, very, safe played and edgeless brand, like gtfooooooohhhhhhhhhh chick. PLZZZZZZZZZ This idea that saying "i love the gays" in 2008 onward was risky is the most hilarious sh*t i've ever heard. Madonna, Cher and other popstars had ALREADY done the hard work when Gaga was still a baby, just stop with this joke already Gaga stans really need to get into their heads that pop music/pop culture/queer culture didn't start in 2008 1

If Taylor was supposedly so bland she would just be ignored instead of being obsessively hated like that This is also why Taylor is the #1 even outside of her success: everyone can't stop talking about her. She's on your mind, no matter if you like her or not. Nobody "bland" would be so obsessively talked about 24/7, people would just ignore her

And that's just two examples. Taylor had every single right to feel that way, saying she should just shut up and take it is purely misogynistic
