PoisonedIvy Posted October 2 Posted October 2 (edited) It's essentially inevitable that Taylor Swift will one day surpass the threshold it takes to be considered the biggest recording artist of all time, a title The Beatles have held for pretty much the entirety of modern music history — consequently, all of our lives. When that day comes, even if it's 20 or 30 years from now, will you log onto ATRL.net and have a meltdown about how she "doesn't deserve it" or how "the past can't be compared to the present" or "people actually BOUGHT music back then!" or something or another? A-V-XYZ Posted October 2 Posted October 2 No. She's already the bigger solo artist than them anyways. 1 1
Katamari Posted October 2 Posted October 2 The Beatles will get boosts when their remaining members pass plus they are always selling/streaming I don't see it happening but yes I will log in at the elderly age of 45 to fume about this in the future! 1 3

JoJo Posted October 2 Posted October 2 The Beatles were only active for 10 years, so even if they do get surpassed one day, I'd still consider them the top artists of all time (and this is coming from a Taylor stan). 6 1

I guess we need to find a way for Paul to live forever. No one cares about Ringo let's be real

A huge contribution to their career record sales were all of the compilations and rereleases that came after their active decade. It's not exactly fair to pretend their 4-500M record sales were primarily from the 1960's decade 3
Solaria Posted October 2 Posted October 2 No but if she surpasses Madonna I will be raging and seething because Swifties will not be able to shut up about it for a week and will be forcing her down our throats as the grand supreme dame of music and I can NOT and WILL not stand for it 1 2
halcyonday Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Taylor is coming for #1 of all time so the haters better be prepared! 3 1 1

Impossible as she has essentially exhausted all of her commercial appeal, and even the boost from her (hopefully very, very, very distant) passing won't be enough to close that gap. If you're asking if Taylor will surpass Madonna in record sales? Buckle up because that's most likely happening within the next decade. Elvis and MJ will fall too.

An artist's entire career is important in the grand scheme of becoming the biggest of all time. Taylor's career decisions are the only ones that have ever led to a potential toppling of the Beatles since they assumed that throne, so it's interesting to weigh their entire legacy against hers and see what contributed to both dynasties. It's not cool to try and downplay one to uplift the other though, in either case

It's really sad that she's able to do it while her artistic output has insanely regressed since folklore. I will make sure she will have her downfall soon. You will all see.
LadyDiana Posted October 2 Posted October 2 No one really cares about that boy band from the 60's. What are they hit songs anyway? No one uses them in streaming era, only few living straights left listening to their dusty old vinyls 2 1 1 4

No one uses them in streaming era, only few living straights left listening to their dusty old vinyls They impacted the music industry greatly, they invented a lot of subgenres within pop and rock music that still exist to this day. They also revolutionized a lot of the production techniques at the time, even before computers & recording software existed; they basically created layering, for example. They're essential to music history even if you don't listen to their catalogue (I don't) so I recommend at least recognizing their influence even if you aren't a fan 1
