Ariana's rise is exactly right after Katy's last hit era. I would say Ariana replaced her.

Overall? No. OOTB-TD-PRISM are still bigger than Ariana's career.

ES was released six months ago and was certified Platinum  in the U.S which is something a Katy Perry album hasn't seen since 2013.

ES spent more weeks at #1 than Katy's last 4 albums combined (and will chart longer too). This is also Ariana's 11th year in the game (spawning 2 #1 hits and a multi-week #1 platinum album); Katy was still trying to recover from the Witness era + gearing up for Smile 11 years into her career. Not to mention her last #1 was only 6 years into her career.

 

OT: Ariana may not have had an album as big as TD, but her weakest-performing album (Yours Truly) still out-performed half of Katy's discography. She has been consistently churning out hits for over a decade (compared to Katy who started running out of steam 5-6 years in). 

 

I don't think there's a definitive way to decide who has had the bigger career, it really depends on how much you value consistency vs. pure figures. Personally, I would rather have six successful albums vs. 3.

Didnt Ariana come out in like 2012/2013? Even her pure sales are trash from that time period. The problem is that Katys pure sales, mainly single sales are so massive that Ariana would never be able to catch up.

I don't mean this as shade but Ariana eclipsed Katy as a celebrity years ago back when Thank U, Next happened. For some fans to hold onto Katy's album sales from a decade ago compared to Ariana's consistent success and longevity, it's pretty clear who is the bigger artists and more renowned in the music industry.

Katy was huge for her first 5 years, but this is the prime example of why: longevity > peak, at least career wise 

Ariana will get one big hit every era and the album will go platinum, something Katy's past three albums couldn't even achieve, in the long run Ariana will be more remembered

also, I might be a little delusional but I think Ariana's imagery, personality and even controversies give her the edge to be more known/popular or referenced in the future 

stats wise they're close with Ariana being slightly ahead, but the current state of their careers gives a clear answer
