gustavothehuman Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Music critics usually follow a specific narrative when it comes to writing reviews. She was never a darling of course, but the Dr. Luke collaboration sealed the deal for a panning of this level. 1

alfonso12 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Can we stop this narrative every time a bad album comes out? Charli just got one of the most acclaimed albums in history and Ariana, Billie and Sabrina also received universal acclaim with their albums. 1 1
yonsé Posted September 22 Posted September 22 katy doesn't have a single critically acclaimed body of work. so does she really count?

There's no way a f**king Miley Cyrus album should be released to critical acclaim lol. I love Miley but I agree that Endless Summer Vacation doesnt deserve its 79 score. I mean Pop bible Emotion by Carly got a 77 right before Poptimism started Edited September 22 by duybeeGAshantiGA 3 1

Klein Posted September 22 Posted September 22 (edited) Poptimism is not about automatically giving high scores to pop albums, it's about rating pop music the same way critics would rate any other genre. It's about not being biased against pop music in general, taking pop music seriously. Critics did not give 143 terrible scores because Katy made pop music, but because they think she made terrible pop music. When you say TTPD let people wonder if poptimism was over... well critics didn't give Taylor an underwhelming score because she was doing pop music but because they weren't as pleased with what she offered this time around. Likewise, Sabrina is not a clue that poptimism is not dead because she got a high score, it just shows that her album was considered great pop music. Yes, the general narrative surrounding an artist informs the critics' opinion. Like if Katy didn't work with Luke she wouldn't be this panned. If Taylor hadn't been everywhere for 3 years, critics would have been more welcoming to TTPD, etc... And it obviously also works in reverse (praising an album more because of the positive narrative surrounding an artist). But it doesn't have that strong of an effect. Maybe the score would be 5 points higher or lower, but that's about it. Edited September 22 by Klein 2

"you" is a classic. And "island" is better than entire Katy's album combined
B-Luke Posted September 22 Posted September 22 She released like 2 albums during peak poptimism and STILL got bad or mediocre reviews. 1
Khal Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Hard to say as Katy never benefited from it with her consistent panning. I do think Short n Sweet being in the 80s might signify poptimism is still with us.

mons†er Posted September 22 Posted September 22 I don't think Katy ended it, she just released a terrible body of work. The reviews are being VERY nice.

'Plastic Hearts' actually showcases how Miley has not only evolved musically, sonically and visually but also vocally. Can't say the same for Katheryn.
