Is Katy Perry the biggest fall from grace for any main pop act in history?

Katy dominated pop music for a period of time, she no longer does. It's the natural way of most successful acts: Avril Lavigne, Paula Abdul, Christina Aguilera, Olivia Newton-John etc. I think the sad part is she's flopping while working with an abuser and making horrendous music. Teenage Dream will remain the hallmark it is in pop history, but she's had the same fate most mainstream acts get a decade after their great commercial success.

But she dominated pop music on a much bigger scale than the artists you're mentioning

In terms of the drop, yes. She was literally the biggest artist decade ago and now she's doing Normani numbers. It's basically Cyndi Lauper level of fall off.

Wow, Cyndi Lauper really had terrible numbers after her hit era. One of her albums sold only 50k copies, and it was from the '90s.

I actually can't think of anyone on her level who has flopped this hard

She can only sing bubblegum pop songs and ballads with her restricted vocals. I said it before, she can't rely on Disney-themed music videos to gain popularity when she gets older.

I'm not surprised at all she flopped this hard. On the contrary, Gaga has the talent that gives her longevity.

But is her fall from grace bigger than the one Katy had?

I mean if we're talking purely in terms of commercial status, maybe.

But people like R Kelly and Diddy arguably have the biggest falls in terms of cultural status (although there are plenty willing to ignore their obscene criminal activities and keep listening).

Hmm, Kanye West also had a big fall after his Nazi comments. But I'm not sure if any of those rappers dominated the way Katy did

Britney's enormous celebrity will always put her above Katy, who only relied on hits to stay relevant

Maybe The Black Eyed Peas are strong contenders for the biggest downfall in history?

Their comeback album didn't have the hype and anticipation that Katy's did. So it was a quiet flop with no expectations.

Also Fergie was a critical member and left, so no one has any real expectations from the group anymore.

imo you're hugely overestimating katy's success at her peak. she was never some kind of undisputed number one mpg. she was very very successful for several years and then she rebranded (for seemingly no real reason?) and her hits stopped hitting. same thing can be said for many of the artists listed in this thread.

also if you're talking actual fall from grace compared compared to commercial failure, then britney EASILY clears katy on that front. not to mention (as i did in an earlier comment) michael jackson, the literal king of pop. i mean i'd argue that even nicki minaj has seen a bigger fall from grace; she went from being p much the undisputed queen of pop rap and guaranteed hitmaker to chronically online clown.

so no, katy isn't the biggest flopper in pop history, just one of the more embarrassing examples~

MJ declined sure, but even he was still able to get a Top 10 hit during Invincible, which is generally seen as a huge flop era. Hell even a few years after his death he was able to score another Top 10 single.

Meanwhile 143's lead single barely went Top 70. And I don't even want to compare her album sales to MJ's because that'd be too cruel  :deadbanana2:

Yes. No question about it. I Can't believe someone has actually surpassed Xtina's floppery.

Katy was mainly a product of her time, TD was kind of the last breath of the 80s formula of big radio hits. It also benefited from coming out in this weird limbo period where pure sales were still strong, digital downloads were peaking, and music videos were more popular than ever thanks to YouTube and the internet.

She also never transitioned or branched out into other ventures before a natural decline like Gaga or Rihanna did, and thus has nothing to fall back on. Because she seems so obsessed with recapturing past successes she isn't capable of growth as an artist hence 143. The sharp downfall was inevitable because you can't heavily rely on radio and GP interest forever.

MJ's stats are massive, even compared to Madonna's or Taylor's. It's just not fair to Katy, lol.

But Michael Jackson is still remembered as a legend and the King of Pop, even though his legacy has been questioned due to the pedophile accusations. He's the biggest pop star in history and is still present in the public consciousness. Meanwhile, Katy Perry is almost erased from history, lol.

THIS. Christina is remembered as one of the greatest voices of her generation—she has a legacy. Katy has Teenage Dream, and that's it

"That's it "? Teenage Dream is one of the most successful pop eras in music . :coffee2: Not many achieve that.

What are you talking about?

Nicki just had her first number 1 single recently and PF2 did 222K first week. She's also on a successful tour.

Britney just had a Top 10 song and Glory outperformed 143 first week. Britney may have been and still is a mess but she's pretty much always been able to sell with very minimal effort. The quality of the music is still good, too.

She doesn't deserve it, but also her stylistic choices are to blame. Why did she think people would tune in to stream this? And the choices lasted for years

This thread is so interesting cause she's been a flop for a decade now and was deemed as such after Witness, after Smile and now again after 143. Like... why is the expectation every time that something huge is going to happen? That's the more interesting discussion - the way that, no matter what, there are high expectations for her. I suppose it speaks to just how insane her peak glory days were.

Looks like Janet came in to save the day.
