Not great. We have to wait and see but this is not a MCU level sales. That said we have to wait until end of day to see how big it is relative to other 100m openers. For now showcount itself is just ok 3479 shows at MTC1 and 2283 at MTC2 (that is lower than Beetlejuice). I started tracking during the 1st movie but I was looking at smaller sets of theaters across cities plus 1st movie had just 11 days of presales. It looked very brisk from the start back then.

I've been checking sales periodically, and I'm at similar conclusions. Within my comps, the one I feel it's going to land closest to after D1 is GxK.

Only comp would be Batman. But that movie started with uber strong sales for early shows (selling out many as soon it started) and above average to good on OD sales for Thursday. Plus release for Batman was way bigger. You could add Dune 2 comps but even that had significant early show sales. This has to be among the few "big" openers without any early shows. FYI Batman started with 65K sales for thursday and it had already sold close to 50K for early shows by then as well. If I have to make a guess Joker 2 would be lucky to hit 25K at MTC1 OD sales. Really bad IMO.

While its not a good comp, its Day 1 will be worse than Marvels. Joker 2 wont come close to 1st movie OW.

Not a good comp. but it will be worse than Flash Day 1 sales as well. May be that is optimal at this point along with other DCEU disasters last year like Aqua bro 2.

Running with this narrative of "divisive reviews" hurting the box office is pretty dumb considering it's scoring similarly to the first film right now and that one got Joaquin his first oscar.

No one ever expected it to be a masterpiece, but they DID expect Todd Philips to utilize Gaga as much as possible and from all accounts so far he failed to do that.

Box Office fans will know that Empire generally overpredicts things, so if he says it's bad then... :rip:

We'll see how the walkups look.

It's Todd's fault tbh. Also what's the point of pre-buying tickets? What's the benefit exactly? :psyduck:

I still think the first 1-3 weeks will be great, but I don't see it having long legs after reading some of the reviews from Venice. It's not really the plot I wanted and considering several people said they went explicitly anti-incels with this sequel....I don't know who the audience for this film will be? Even Gaga's fans are crying about her not being utilized enough and the false advertising/billing nnnn.

It's def turning profit but it's absolutely not coming close to 1B. Grossing on par with the first film was already a huge challenge with it being a musical, but this just confirms it.

Making this a "musical" was it's downfall, they really don't know their viewers it seems :rip:

If a movie is in-demand you may not be able to secure good tickets / any tickets without pre-buying. This is especially true for superhero movies which tend to be frontloaded because fans want to see them ASAP.

Might just be my circle but the only time anyone i've known IRL has pre-ordered a cinema ticket has been Barbenheimer. Literally everytime i just turn up at the time it says. Never realised pre-ordering was super popular

I could see it opening pretty big but not having legs like the first one did if the reviews are correct

This sequel is unnecessary much like the first movie.

I really liked the first movie, and am still excited for the sequel. Todd Phillips, you have less than a month to edit more GaR scenes in. Joker, who?

So it might indeed be a fad?

Didn't see that coming.

No GaGa scenes, no box office ratings
