in the US, movie theaters keep 50% of the ticket sales money, the rest go to the studio and other things.

 

They obviously don't play the movies for free

 

Overseas, movie theaters keep 60 or even 70% of the ticket sales. That's why it's so important that a movie makes 2.5x or even 3.5x their budget
