I don't think this is seeing any Oscar noms… the first Joker had the success to back its campaign up. This is a sequel and looks like it will perform worse

anyways joker is a comic book character at the end of the day ofc reviews are going to be mixed

what matters is that gár is being acclaimed for her performance as usual

Indiewire is the most snobbish film critic publisher.

Not surprised that they pan almost everything

The revelation of the movie is Gaga as Lee: on a technical level, it's so impressive to see how the actress and musician modulates her talent and abilities. To better suit the film's aesthetic (and match Phoenix's method of performing his songs in character), Gaga lets Lee have a breathy, pitchy style to her singing, only opening up the throttle during some of the fantasy musical numbers. It's a performance that recalls Ellen Greene's Audrey in "Little Shop of Horrors," demonstrating Gaga's huge range.

What's even better is how she's able to tap into the psychological realism of Harleen in a similar fashion to Phoenix's take on Arthur...Harley comes to life in a way she never has before, her madness and obsession parallel yet distinct from Joker's.

The fact she's absent for the whole last hour of the movie is a bit worrisome for a Best Actress nod. She needed to anchor the movie, but it looks like she was great technically while the movie is still Joaquin's show….

Joker won the Golden Lion (top prize at the Venice Film Festival) back in 2019, so no, it wasn't panned right away when it premiered in the festival.

anyways, lukewarm reception was pretty much expected as sequels generally don't do as well as the first film + the genre change is going to put off many people.

Hard to get a nod from a panned movie (see: House of Gucci)
