Punctuation police, is a period before an emoji unnecessary?

This is something I struggle with. I don't want ATRL gays to laugh at my grammar and sentence structures.

I feel like question marks and exclamation marks are ok before an emoji. But a period feels useless and looks weird. For example:

I like twinks. :bird:
vs

I like daddies :chick1:

Thoughts?

I feel the same way. :rip: Like I try to be as grammatically correct as possible but a period before the emote just kills the vibe.

For me emojis always act as a period at the end of a sentence. You're right that it feels useless and weird.

Emotes feel like more fancy periods in casual online settings

No full stop before an emoji imo

No, that's doing too much. If you're using an emoji at the end of the sentence, a period isn't necessary. Periods while texting are somewhat unnecessary as a whole unless you're sending a paragraph or more.

:gaycat: just put them in front to get the best of both worlds.

I use the emoji in place of a period like other users have already said. Putting the emoji after the period makes it appear that the emoji is separate from that sentence/idea, so, like, if I had to add a period, I would add it after, which still looks messy :clown:.

Speaking of grammar, I always get a chuckle when I see a thread title where both the auxiliary and main verbs have been conjugated, like, "Did Rihanna hinted at new music with this tweet?" or something like that. English is hard and pretty inconsistent, so I totally get it considering how many users are here from non-English-speaking countries :bird: You're doing great!

On an online forum I don't care about being grammatically correct lol

I've always considered the emoji as the period...but then again, I never capitalize the word AFTER the emoji because that looks weird as well to my OCD eyes :rip:

yes, it is unnecessary

I never use the period before the emoji because the emoji is still part of the sentence imo and also it just feels weird if you use the period after the emoji :bird:

Emotes act as punctuation :thing:

When an emoji is between sentences, I have to have a fullstop tho. For example, I love d 🍌. They taste amazing. Not I love 🍌 They taste amazing.

I am a chronic punctuation overthinker, and I think both are fine

If you put a fullstop before an emoji, I see you as being lowkey serious. You also want me to pause longer  before reading more

Without the fullstop, it simply feels lighthearted and more casual

I'm Grammar obsessed as well, but in online settings, I like it better without a period. It's more aesthetically pleasing to look at :bird:

A period before or after an emoji looks ugly. It can act as the period tbh :chick1: It's not like they'd be used in a professional setting anyway - though I will say that whatever is after (assuming it's a new sentence) should start off capitalized.

@feelslikeadream well?

Nope. It is just a different way of reading the emote. :suburban:

Emojis are periods

If we were to assume a lexicalist approach and treat emojis as words, no period signals that the emoji is contributing to the proposition.

Example semantic notation:

p = I like daddies

 :chick1:⟧ = λxλp.SLUTTY_CHICK(x, p)

⟦"I like daddies :chick1:"⟧ = SLUTTY_CHICK(x, "I like daddies")
