SoldierofLove Posted September 1 Posted September 1 This is something I struggle with. I don't want ATRL gays to laugh at my grammar and sentence structures. I feel like question marks and exclamation marks are ok before an emoji. But a period feels useless and looks weird. For example: I like twinks. vs I like daddies Thoughts?
Jotham Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I feel the same way. Like I try to be as grammatically correct as possible but a period before the emote just kills the vibe. 4
welham Posted September 1 Posted September 1 For me emojis always act as a period at the end of a sentence. You're right that it feels useless and weird. 6
JO1s Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Emotes feel like more fancy periods in casual online settings 4
ATRL Moderator Oxygen Posted September 1 ATRL Moderator Posted September 1 No full stop before an emoji imo
Big Bad Wolf Posted September 1 Posted September 1 No, that's doing too much. If you're using an emoji at the end of the sentence, a period isn't necessary. Periods while texting are somewhat unnecessary as a whole unless you're sending a paragraph or more.
Rino Posted September 1 Posted September 1 (edited) just put them in front to get the best of both worlds. Edited September 1 by Rino
Curaga Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I use the emoji in place of a period like other users have already said. Putting the emoji after the period makes it appear that the emoji is separate from that sentence/idea, so, like, if I had to add a period, I would add it after, which still looks messy . Speaking of grammar, I always get a chuckle when I see a thread title where both the auxiliary and main verbs have been conjugated, like, "Did Rihanna hinted at new music with this tweet?" or something like that. English is hard and pretty inconsistent, so I totally get it considering how many users are here from non-English-speaking countries You're doing great! 1 1
Into The Void Posted September 1 Posted September 1 On an online forum I don't care about being grammatically correct lol 3
nostalgic Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I've always considered the emoji as the period...but then again, I never capitalize the word AFTER the emoji because that looks weird as well to my OCD eyes
Paparazzaid Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I never use the period before the emoji because the emoji is still part of the sentence imo and also it just feels weird if you use the period after the emoji
duybeeGAshantiGA Posted September 1 Posted September 1 When an emoji is between sentences, I have to have a fullstop tho. For example, I love d 🍌. They taste amazing. Not I love 🍌 They taste amazing.
ks_dollar Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I am a chronic punctuation overthinker, and I think both are fine If you put a fullstop before an emoji, I see you as being lowkey serious. You also want me to pause longer before reading more Without the fullstop, it simply feels lighthearted and more casual

aesthetic bih Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I'm Grammar obsessed as well, but in online settings, I like it better without a period. It's more aesthetically pleasing to look at 1
Almodusa Posted September 1 Posted September 1 A period before or after an emoji looks ugly. It can act as the period tbh It's not like they'd be used in a professional setting anyway - though I will say that whatever is after (assuming it's a new sentence) should start off capitalized.
Pendulum Posted September 1 Posted September 1 (edited) If we were to assume a lexicalist approach and treat emojis as words, no period signals that the emoji is contributing to the proposition. Example semantic notation: p = I like daddies ⟦ ⟧ = λxλp.SLUTTY_CHICK(x, p) ⟦"I like daddies "⟧ = SLUTTY_CHICK(x, "I like daddies") Edited September 1 by Pendulum 1
