Wicked Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Let's say they did, whats the upside of quality as a commercial pop act?

Alex Posted August 16 Posted August 16 let me just say Doja Cat and SZA are the only ones who successfully pulled off long albums in recent memory tbh 1
Twizzy Posted August 16 Posted August 16 I wanna argue the OT but yes I agree that CC and TTPD both feel very bloated, and have offered little to nothing to add to their artistry. Actually I'd say the amount of songs and constant sad attempts to boost the album streams from Taylor's side is cheapening the "poet" image she so desperately wants. 1

On the other hand, I love American Requiem, Blackbiird, Jolene, 16 Carriages, Texas Hold Em', Ya Ya, Tyrant, II Hands II Heaven Thanks for responding. Even when II Most Wanted remains the weakest point on the record, I absolutely adore the album but at the same time I can understand when people say it's difficult to listen to front to back. What I'll never get is the „mid" and „lackluster/quality drop-off compared to Renaissance" talking points.
Hobbes Posted August 16 Posted August 16 I can't speak for Beyonce but TTPD (standard version) was a chore to get through, and when she announced the double album I was genuinely a bit deflated at the idea of having another 12 or however many tracks. There was no need for it. Some songs belong on the cutting room floor. Most of TTPD did. 1

I don't think it's as good as Renaissance but to me Renaissance is a masterpiece, but it's not bad in quality. It just doesn't work well as individual tracks. It is a hefty album though so I have to be in a mood to listen. Renaissance is just under an hour, where as Cowboy Carter is literally almost 1 hr & 20 mins. I love long albums (like Ellie Goulding's 25-tracks) but even I can't listen that long. If there's tracks that don't interest me, it gets harder to listen in full but not impossible.

I do feel like she's doing that to stay #1, as she said she wants to break her own record. On top of that, this is an era lasting this long with #1 that Ratty would have wanted.
ATRL Moderator feelslikeadream Posted August 16 ATRL Moderator Posted August 16 I haven't heard Cowboy Carter yet, but I'm gonna assume the answer for both is a resounding NO.

Rihinvention Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Cowboy Carter and TTPD both felt like they were for the fans. Fans who "can't get enough" of each artist. So to those fans, 1.5 – 2 hours of music is completely reasonable. To everyone else, "the cream of the crop rises to the top." As a result, the songs that fall below their top 4 or 5 don't get much replay, and the whole project feels weaker because of it. However, the next time each of them releases a more concise album, it will seem more thought out, more edited, more curated. i think it's a smart move. Feed super-fans and critics whilst setting your next project up to look more polished. 2
vuelve88 Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Taylor has won a large quantity of Album of the Year Grammys
CottageHore Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Taylor probably, but Beyoncé? She releases an album like every half decade, doesn't she? And her albums are always good and you can tell she puts time into them. 2 1
ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted August 16 ATRL Moderator Posted August 16 I disagree. I loved both CC and TTPD and thought they were both great albums.
Pheromosa Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Well CC is a masterpiece and TTPD has some good moments. I'm giving you an F-

modeblock Posted August 16 Posted August 16 (edited) Okay, you can't tell me that both Cowboy Carter and TPTSD would not benefit from knocking off like 50% of the songs and creating a TIGHT 11-13 album. Even as a huge fan of both, it was a ******* slog to get through, and it makes it much harder to latch onto something and develop a bond to the album when you're overwhelmed with material, especially if said extraneous material is not that fantastic. Or do you believe they're the perfect amounts? One good thing about CC is there is multiple under 2 minute songs unlike TTPD
OrgVisual Posted August 16 Posted August 16 And Cowboy Carter is not even that long. It has 27 tracks but 8 are interludes / spoken intros
