French DJ Bob Sinclar depressed about people being on their phones during concert

Recommended Posts

Basically he's ranting about a concert he did lately in Greece, claiming this was the "worst gig" of his career since people were just standing there and filming instead of enjoying the moment. Apparently, this has happened a lot these past few years and made him depressed/wanting to stop playing live sets.

Tbh I kinda agree with him, it must be terrible for artists to think that people aren't enjoying themselves (in comparison to a few decades ago when technology wasn't as omnipresent and advanced) at their shows but I also can't blame people for wanting to remember that night if they want to.

Ye, it's disgusting. Same thing about concerts. And then those people go on instagram and upload dozens of lq clips to their stories. I don't understand why those people pay crazy amounts of money for their favourite artists just to watch them on their mobile screens the entire time. You don't need a personal recording of every moment that happened. Just enjoy the damn show. Make a few short clips as the absolute necessity to "prove" you've been there, but put the phone away for a good 99% of the time and enjoy ffs.

Due to social media parties has become a place for shooting content and posing and fake "vibing" instead of getting lose yourself in music and let go.

As someone who was lucky enough to enjoy Ibiza club scene in 2014 when I was just 20 and coming there last year I was disgusted what it has become. Social media is ruining music and music scene in general and since Gen Z dont know anything else it will just get worse.

Thank God for clubs like Berghain where phones are prohibited.

girls shut the **** up. First of all, no-one should have to face being recorded without their consent. Second of all, if you pay to go see a show/theatre/DJ set, ******* go and enjoy it. Ive stopped going to pop shows because all the time there's a sea of mobile phones up in the air blocking the view so they can post on their stupid social media profiles.

It's ******* trash, disrespectful and I hope artists start prohibiting the use of mobile phones asap.

"no-one should have to face being recorded without their consent" then don't have a career that involves you making money from putting yourself in the public eye :rip: artists have a right to privacy in their personal, day to day lives but not when they book out a club, theatre or arena. that's just absurd :toofunny2:

and recording doesn't stop you from enjoying the experience at all. if anything, the audience recording your show is a massive compliment because they want to revisit those memories and watch back when their favourite artist played their favourite songs.

plus some artists are semi-retired and barely ever tour/perform anymore. their wider fanbase benefits massively from people uploading footage of those gigs to youtube or livestream it on instagram.

anytime i've ever heard an artist complain about this it's been laced with pretension and likely stems from a one-sided dynamic where all the attention is on them so they think all the power should lie with them. like i'm not going to take a millionaire seriously if they try to tell me what to do or how to enjoy myself :rip:

Always amazes me to read this "if you pay you can do whatever you want" argument as if that seals the deal. Mind you, I actually agree to some extent, I don't see how taking a few pics or videos can do harm, that clip posted by @Kayeri Mantisi sums it up well. But I also think that people often pass the limit and having a huge amount of phones constantely lit, with their owners barely moving, can really drain the energy of a crowd. So I also support artists who, for example, choose to tape cameras as an experiment.

is the argument that people attending the concert don't know best how to enjoy themselves any better? if recording a concert was really so ruinous to the experience then it wouldn't be something most people decide to do.

Didn't say that, anyway, people surely always know what's best for themselves, yeah, look at the world around you.

I agree mostly but i don't think using a phone is, for most people, part of "how they enjoy themselves." It's part of an addiction to social media, status anxiety, showing off, curating and manufacturing a fake life to impress and lie to others. We can pretend it's about other things, revisiting memories, sharing it with people you love etc, but 95% it's because you want to brag.

I used to like filming when I was in the club/at concerts but can't remember the last time I actually even watched any of those clips. Ever since noticing that now I just record a vid/snap a pic or two to capture the memory and enjoy the show in the moment

It's more of a social media flaunt than anything else if we're being honest :rip:

Same here. I use social media less often than I did back in the 2010s and I realized over the years that enjoying the moment was far better than filming the whole concert just to let 3/4 people know that I was there. Plus, I always ended up deleting those videos anyway.

You know damn right that we're not talking about people taking a few pics or small clips. There are literally thousands of phones up all the time recording the whole thing. It is distressing and stupid, and people are paying thousands for tickets to then have to watch the concert with various phone screens in front of them. It's such an idiotic thing...

PLUS, all of this content goes into social media and people's hard drives. Which is AWFUL for the climate as they will sit, forever, in warehouses with ever expanding hard drives that need vast amounts of water to cool down. It's vile and completely pointless.

I remember going to see the Spice Girls at Wembley and for sure will never spend that money again to see a sea of phonescreens blocking everyone's views as soon as the girls appeared. Like, the whole of the show people had their phones up in front of everyone else.

Literally had the Spice Girls appearing in front of them and the first thing they do is to take out their phones to record it and watch it through their screen. Plus, everyone else behind them had to contend with literally thousands of phone screens blocking the actual view of Geri Halliwell and the rest.... ******* morons.

OT: Take your money and shut up, he doesn't seem to be concerned when it comes to concerts becoming so expensive

girl why are you so abrasive and dramatic over a difference in opinion on whether people should film concerts :rip:

if you don't like concerts in 2024 then that sucks for you i guess, but i don't see why everyone should change their behaviour to accommodate you

100% agree with him. This generation never enjoys anything. People only care about recording things on their phones to post it online. It's sad for them tbh.

Posted

I completely understand where he's coming from. I waited 7 years to see my fav live and only recorded a few small clips because I know damn well that is not the way one enjoys a concert, it completely drains the magic out of it and feeds a very harmful behavior. If people want to see a show through their screens so much, artists might aswell record themselves performing and post it.

I always record a few clips and never post them on social media, just as a memory, I love to go back after some time and re-watch

But I hate when people post the whole thing online

Especially in stories, I always completely jump and skip when someone does that, is super annoying

Imagine being this aggressive or being depressed over something millions of people do that you can't control :rip: Don't go to a concert until the end of time then because this isn't stopping anytime soon, it's a new generation and it's true that people are going to do whatever they want with their paid ticket. Boohoo, you're still making millions and people still care enough to come to your show, be grateful.

Well, it's the social media era, babes. People have to SHOW what they are doing every second of their lives, and flaunt that they were capable to go to a concert, a party, a country, any event you can think of. People are doing this even in the cinemas, what is a pure absurd! And it's very sad actually, cause it's seems that these people are more worried about what they gonna post online and how people will react to that than to enjoy the whole thing. But it's not only for events. They do this during their whole life. And these new generations that are growing up with social media will become even worse. I stopped using instagram and I feel free. I don't remember the last time I posted something on there and I barelly use it.
But anyway, when I go to a concert, I do a few pictures or videos of the artist, just because I'm a fan and want to save that moment for me, but everytime I do, I feel like I disconnect a little from the spetacle, so I prefer to watch the whole thing and enjoy the moment.
