NoOneDiesFromLove Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Tbh I thought it would do worse, especially coming after that failed Wonder era 1
constantinople Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Taylor Swift absorbed his basic fanbase and wtf is mendeZ... is mendeS, in portuguese
Poptart89 Posted August 11 Posted August 11 (edited) His comeback sound was boring and pales to a lot of his earlier stuff. There are lots of artists doing the folk country thing these days and doing it better, with more interesting voices. Why Why Why is a step above the snoozefest Joshua Bassett just released. Also the only time I saw people outside of pop spaces talking about his song it was to ask who he almost had a baby with. Edited August 11 by Poptart89

He needs to go full on pop boy and open up more. Fully agree with the first half. Shawn Mendes' appeal between 2015-2019 was the fact he was a conventionally attractive white guy who played the guitar. His persona and lyrics evoked a sweet self-insert boyfriend type, but not much else. Songs like "In My Blood" and "Youth" proved he could explore more interesting and deep topics, but for the most part he played it safe. There's still interest for WGWAGs, but people want more substance, authenticity, and indeed, personality from them. Noah Kahan, Zach Bryan, and Luke Combs come to mind. Hozier's in a league of his own. Even Benson Boone, while not as critically acclaimed, has explored more complex and intriguing topics in his music and despite being conventionally attractive, doesn't make it his selling point as an artist. However, I disagree that going 'full on pop boy' is the ideal direction for Mendes' career. It just doesn't seem to match his personality and overall vibe, so pulling a Timberlake or Weeknd, even a "Voicenotes" -era Charlie Puth, would come across as incredibly awkward and forced. My favourite Mendes songs are "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back", "When You're Gone", "Where Were You in the Morning?", and especially "Lost In Japan". Personally, I think he should attempt expanding on the sonic palette of the latter two - this smooth jazzy and/or kinda bluesy vibe. Harry Styles and now Benson Boone have taken over the rock-ish lane, so that would be a good way of making him stand out and attract a new audience. I'm thinking collaborating with the likes of Clairo, Leon Bridges, RAYE, and Laufey. He's also cited Daniel Caesar as one of his inspirations, and a song in the vein of "Valentina" would be really cool. Potential of delving into some subtle psychedelic vibes too...almost makes me wonder how him and Tame Impala would work together. One thing's certain - shifting to folk wasn't a wise move. 2
jeffersonairplanes19 Posted August 11 Posted August 11 I also should point out that the song hasn't debut on the hot 100 yet and won't impact radio until Tuesday. there's also live tv performances in the future (unlikely because he doesn't like leaving the house but still) and of the hit songs Shawn has only 2 debuted high everything else debuted super low and then rose over the course of the year so this isn't really that big a deal.
LastGreatBloodline Posted August 11 Posted August 11 oh this songs is actually not terrible. But Shawn never didi anything interesting as an artist, so the GP simply lost interest.
OnlyManInTheWorld Posted August 12 Posted August 12 (edited) It's very simple: he got replaced by Harry Styles, who will also get replaced at some point Edited August 12 by OnlyManInTheWorld 1
