Music execs want to go back to Tuesday for new music releases

I must say I don't think I understand "people listen to music less on weekends" argument. It's quite the opposite for me. Is it super common for people to listen to music while working?

you go to work / school with music on you leave work / school with music on. you might also shop with music on and do all sorts of activities. weekends are for parties, (but how many new songs you listen to while partying) and for relaxing which again, probably old music, if any, most likely a show or film. spotify data shows us that Saturdays and especially sundays are very slow in terms of consumption.

I can kinda see his point that Friday releases killing the momentum as it doesn't allow word of mouth. By the time Monday comes, people most likely already decide whether the song is worth talking about. Releasing them mid-week might prolong it's life span, and it might last at last couple of days before dying out (if it's destined to do so).

For us, consumers, it doesn't really make any difference. I would prefer Mondays over Tuesdays tho.

I like albums on Friday cause I have the chance to listen to the album in full and in order. If I'm busy, I listen to the songs that have the best reviews first. Singles can be released whenever.

Release day in the UK used to be a Monday and I used to think that made the most sense. :michael:

It was actually Sunday.

Digital on Sunday, physical on Monday.

In the digital and early streaming era Friday made sense.

Now that we are full in streaming dominance and weekend streaming numbers are historically lower and get a boost on Monday...I wouldn't mind a Monday release and weekend numbers will be based more on organic streams as even stans don't go as far on day 6 and 7 unless the race is tight. Mon-Tues dip on Wed then a surge on Thursday and Friday and the weekend will do what it does based on the quality

Instead of arbitrarily changing the day of the week, they should invest in more than one single two weeks before the album and then absolutely no promotion after release other than vinyl variants if they want to stop people from moving on so quickly

ok so the stats indicate that we consume more music during weekdays but honestly it sucks as an experience...on fridays it makes the most sense after a long work week to then be rewarded with new music plus you can sort of stay up late and wait for the midnight drop because you only have one work day left (friday itself) and usually fridays in the office are a little slower in general so even if you didnt sleep well to stay up for music itt's not a problem. Obviously this only applies to people who really enjoy pop culture and would stay up for new music in the first place but that's the type of stuff that helps build fan bases and momentum and stuff...not ppl who casually consume music at any time and dont care if they missed out on the original time drop of the song / would rather sleep and then wake up, do their full work day and then come back to listen to what an artist has released.

So basically labels are having a harder time pumping hits out of their cash cows because they don't have  4 days of radio play to force the tracks down the listeners throat?

I definitely prefer friday releases bc i have more time in the weekends to listen but the stats don't lie so it makes sense i guess

also did everyone forget all other media forms (movies, books) release on Tuesdays?

also when we used to have Tues releases, the music would still be released in other parts of the world on fridays so they'd all leak at least 5 days in advance anyway

maybe they should think more about better promotions for new releases.

Mondays or friday for me

Nah, Friday still makes the most sense to be honest. Also, many artists still release whenever they want. Many ignore Firdays and release on Wednesday, Thursday...

I understand, no employee should be subjected to weekend works.

Everybody wants to die on Monday.

Its only fizzled out by Monday if the music isn't good. Tackle that issue…

What's with the Tuesday hate in this thread? Poor girl just existing making y'all pressed and bothered

This is so f*cking stupid. It's not because of the "fans enjoyment" but because of the money they make for a Tuesday release. And that's the LABEL HEADS that take in most of that money. Tuesday releases only makes sense from a business standpoint given that the weekdays (especially Tuesday's) are great for reach and exposure since people are just working, at school, or at home. But the weekends I feel actually help build organic interest and make music feel celebratory when it is released.

I truly feel the artists do not care, but it's the label heads and execs that do lmao! With making content, everything is algorithmic, and this is one of those things that is algorithmic. It's just weird how they're saying the audience are the ones that benefit from it when that's not the case whatsoever. They only give af about their pockets and that's it. :deadbanana2:

Just keep it on Friday's… it makes the most sense. Hard working people only have time during the weekends to get into albums and new songs. And over here it always used to be Friday anyways …

The argument that people stream less on weekends is wrong, there are no work playlists on loop on weekends…

And based from very one sided data.
they are comparing engagement when ppl still (massively) physically purchased albums to streaming.

what are they going to do when Tuesday numbers are huge due to curiosity and then continue to fizzle over the following days ☠️

saying you can promote less over the weekend when social media has made it possible to push engagement any second of any day ☠️
