The lack of promotion is the problem, not a Friday release date. No one wants to work anymore.

Traditional promo is useless now, everything revolves around playlisting and TikTok attention.

I prefer music releases on Fridays because it's a fun day in general and the perfect day to enjoy music from your favorite artists, especially if you're doing night life that weekend and can't way to hear new tracks during the weekend.

The music industry should be far more worried about combating AI music and its accompanying plagiarism than Friday releases, let's be real.

I'd be fine with it, I'm usually way too busy on the weekends to check out new music. I typically download what I want on Friday and then don't get to listen until Sunday or Monday :rip:

Honestly I used to LOVE when new music was released on Mondays & Tuesdays. Because it made the beginning of the week more fun. Then by that weekend everyone knows the new songs to play at the clubs and parties.

People use playlists and the autoplay more during the week while working. It makes sense

I must say I don't think I understand "people listen to music less on weekends" argument. It's quite the opposite for me. Is it super common for people to listen to music while working?

New Music Friday is a staple now, it allows people to have all new music prior to the weekend and it just gets you in the mood.

It's ridiculous for them to try to change the schedule in the streaming era when all it matters is how much playlisting a song can get to guarantee longevity.

I mean for us, consumers, tbh is not a big deal. For example Brazil doesn't have a New Music Friday playlist, it's called This Week's Releases bc labels here don't give a **** about this thing and that's bc there's no official relevant chart to make the industry follow a certain schedule based on their tracking week. So whatever they decide alongside the charts companies from the USA the other markets that follow their schedule will follow suit. If they think they can maximize the numbers outside the weekend based on the current general public consumption, then I don't think is that much of a bad idea as long as it really is based on facts, numbers and real data, not whatever bullshit these execs normally has on their heads.

When Beyoncé did that digital drop it was because she wanted not only to having a full tracking week and prevent leaks (remember her album 4 leaking months in advance) but also becoming the #1 topic of discussion during that weekend. The industry just followed bc they thought every big artist could have the same impact as she had during that weekend and they were proved wrong lol.

She didn't have the full tracking week. It still began on Tuesday back then

Working maybe — working commute more likely

They can't leave **** alone :ahh:

Yeah, releasing on Friday is not optimal anymore in the streaming era.

But Tuesday is such a random day to choose. They should either go Monday like Korea or Wednesday like Japan.

It's not a bad idea, I rarely listen music the weekends, most of the music I listen is in work days, especially when I'm working so I'd honestly wouldn't be against this.

Because they think that's what people want. It's cool with the young crowd for a quick hit, but, as we know, it is not a good formula for a sustainable hit. Artists need to start doing videos, performing, interviewing, and just fun things that get people excited for an era. I think Chappell is doing so well right now because she is promoting like a pop star should (& shes interesting, pretty, and has good music). Then you have the other crowd that want to be like Taylor and Beyonce with none of the notoriety which has made for a very boring era in pop.

To be fair traditional promotion is very limited nowadays. No one watches live tv anymore with the exception of old people so all the talk show/late night show performances don't do ****.

And there's no places like TRL, 106 & Park etc. What shows exist today that occupy the purpose those 2 used to occupy? Like if a performer wants to perform and interact with a predominately young audience, where do they go today?

TikTok and spotify playlists is the only effective promo in 2024.

I don't think this is true at all. Megan got famous from freestyles she posted. Wet Leg got popular from performing a lot. Most recently Chappell Roan has been performing at festivals and such boosting her popularity. It sucks that there are no dedicated spaces for artists on TV anymore but there's tiny desk, jimmy kimmel, talk shows, etc that they can perform on and places like Hot Ones that are popular as well. And it's not like people don't talk about music anymore, "artists" have just started to become boring and labels want clones. If anything, the labels are to blame, though.

people stream less on weekends, Spotify numbers on Saturday and Sunday are much lower than during the week

People don't stream less, places of work do. Think about the shops/offices etc are open during the week, they stick their Spotify playlist on and have that on a loop during the day. This will decrease on the weekend, Saturday slightly and Sunday even more so with some places closed entirely.
