The Job Market Sucks

before this new job, my biggest conflict was being "overqualified"

I fear this is going to get worse with the increase of free college degrees across the country. This is a good thing, on paper, but I honestly think it's going to screw a lot of people over. Degrees will begin to lose their value. Those with Master degrees will become "overqualified" for so many jobs.

Whew this thread making me feel a lot better just now. Canned my job about 6 weeks ago - I know it's not the smartest decision to make when you've got commitments and bills to pay, but the feeling of dread and depression I was getting from my job was awful. It was a fairly small team, I was the first new employee after about a 15 year gap of not needing to hire anyone new and for a long time it was going well. My closest colleague (as in who I worked with the most) was unreliable and I had picked up on issues that aren't totally relevant to post online but it was a hindrance in the workplace and causing work related issues. I spoke to my manager on 3 separate occasions, the first two she was helpful, said she'd approach her and try sort something out. The third conversation went sour - I was told if I had a personal issue with my colleague I should sort it on my own terms and it wasn't my employers issue. I literally told her nothing about this was personal but in a job where the workload is supposed to be split 50/50 between the two of us it's hardly fair when you're auditing the work and it's showing I'm doing way more that things are just supposed to be okay like that because she's worked here longer.

After that I felt like every time something there were mistakes or issues in the workplace the blame culture landed to me even when I could prove I didn't do anything wrong. I have savings which I knew would keep me afloat for a while so I left, I know those savings won't keep me going forever, but regardless, I was hoping unemployment turnover would be pretty quick regardless. Here I am 6 weeks later, applying for multiple jobs a day and yet to even get an interview. It's frustrating. But just need to keep pushing to get something.

You're not alone. I JUST got a job after being unemployed for nearly 9 months. It's been incredibly stressful and frustrating to say the least. I applied to over 500 jobs and also had multiple rounds of interviews to no avail. I kept putting off going back to being a server because even though I'm really good at it and can make some quick money I don't like the job itself and my ego was getting in the way too. I ended up starting a restaurant job at the beginning of July and left after only 3ish weeks because a good friend of mine who works at a bank referred me to an open position they had and I did great in the interview and happy to say I got the job! My background is in marketing so this type of job wasn't even on my radar but it's a nice role with good pay and a career path.
This goes to show how important connections are, text every friend and family member that you can think of and try to get something there.
Hang in there @brenda-walsh these types of situations are hard but there is a light!

i'm a college student currently and seeing the job market so terrible has be so worried, esp with even my major being so saturated (comp sci :deadbanana4:) hopefully by the time i graduate it's calmed down a bit but it only seems like it's getting worse

Also the Layoffs this past year have been the worst I've ever seen:deadbanana4: these companies do not want to pay a living Wage at all. Corporate Greed plays a bigger part than some may think. And it's in nearly every field and industry, and has trickle down to even the lowest level of service industry. My brother is a Tech guy making 6 figures and I'm a restaurant manager making border line minimum wage. And we both experience the same struggles with the job market and trying to get new work. 😭 and I went to a Top 50 College, have 10 years of experience and Military. And it's still a struggle to survive. Lowkey don't know how most other Americans can live in this economy with under a 100K Salary. It's just unrealistic for the government to expect everyone to have a Masters and a career that pays enough to own a home, without taking out a loan

It has always been a terrible system (for us, not for the companies of course), has always sucked and it will only get worse. It's a total scam, but most people accept it so.....

I'm in digital marketing, if i see a job on linkedin, indeed, or the company website that has an easy apply thats really the only way to apply so you end up applying to a lot. if not i search linkedin and other website to directly contact recruiters and hiring managers. but honestly, i've found a lot of these places don't even read the cover letters nor does catering your resume to the job make that big of a difference

My company was looking for a marketing person earlier this year. We received 630 applicants in 3 weeks :rip:

But it is always this way, marketing jobs seem to attract a really high number of applicants.

The other day this young little 18 year old boy wrote to me on grindr and we started chatting, I asked him what he wants to study in university. He said marketing and I told him please please don't do that :chick3:. But I could not convince him, he was like "this is what I care about idc" and I felt so bad for him.

I think marketing careers are often a way creative, verbal/writing-oriented people can make their interests and talent work in a business setting.

If I could give advice to anyone is to find a niche in marketing. Like b2b marketing for some really specific service. Those types of jobs are generally much harder to find someone for and will have better job security and pay as a result. Whereas something like, digital marketing for a clothing company or a restaurant chain, is much more broad and there will be more competition.
