Why is Sam perceived as tacky while Charli is seen as innovative and groundbreaking for her BRAT era?

I think they are?  Maybe not that beloved by the queer community but I think most gays would consider them a queer icon considering the amount of success and impact they've had.

Because they present feminine and there's nothing that ATRL (and most gays in real life) hate more than a man with feminine traits

The word Icon use to have meaning.

They could've actually been one, if the music was fresh and captivating. No matter what the pick me f4gs are saying above, their image is not the problem cause news flash appeasing to the straights through hating femininity doesn't make you better, THAT's what hurting the queer community. But yeah, Sam could've been one if their albums weren't boring.

There's numerous articles calling Sam Smith an "Icon", perhaps not  specifically an "Queer" but an icon nevertheless, y'all can disagree but we know many members on this site isn't actually  factual at the slightest..

I'd say it's because Sam politicized their queerness in a way that mostly only spoke to straight people. The average queer person is not shocked by allusions to watersports, corsets, heels and french revolution decadence - so when Sam began touting all of these things as a shocking display of freedom and a reveal of their true self it rang empty and generic.

Sam's fans are a great example of how deep this runs too. What are the 3 things their fans will speak up about regarding Sam without fail?

1. Sam's weight/body

2. Sam's femme expression

3. Sam's gender identity/pronouns

This shows that even to Sam's dedicated fans they're not much more than an avatar for what they see as queer expression and something to be defended, rather than an artist with a clear and singular point of view. I find it interesting how these fans find a way to pin nearly any criticism of Sam on the critic's own insecurities (such as claiming they're fatphobic) but have zero energy for ACTUAL queer icons like the incredible Beth Ditto who is both fat and not interested in making her size her only point of view. Her band Gossip just released a f*cking PHENOMENAL record last fall, and yet... crickets.

Sam is a boring, cliched dork and I have no time for their tired schtick.

I think they are an LGBT+ icon. They have accomplished a lot with their talent and Sam is a nice representation of a queer person in the music industry (the same way artists like Elton John and George Michael have been in the past). They deserve their flowers and should be applauded for that :clap3:

You may not like many of their late choices in fashion, but they are just doing what they like. Try to start valuing queer people for their accomplishments beyond their looks or their choices.

This. Maybe it's anecdotal but I've met more than a few gay men IRL who are obsessed with Troye Sivan's looks but I doubt they could actually name a song or album from him.

Sam's music is simply not gay guy friendly :suburban:

i'd personally love for them to really lean into it and make a great club type album but despite Unholy and a few others they still insist on making albums full of ballads or at least slower music

Sorry the multiple postings I thought my internet was crashing :rip:

Denying that what they represent STILL is something that straights and lots of LGBT+ are not confortable with is certainly a choice.

Example: their latest smash Unholy. I've seen the gays celebrate this song's success way more for rapist enabler Kim Petras than for Sam themselves. It does say a lot about the community, let alone the rest of the world in an ever-rising far-right climate. :coffee2:
