Migs Posted July 14 Posted July 14 (edited) Blackout was Britney's magnum opus and then came Circus. Most people label it as a weak record, but I think it's a pretty good one. I would just change that awful cover (maybe to something like the one above) and make some alterations to the tracklist… 1. Womanizer 2. Circus 3. Quicksand 4. Kill The Lights 5. Shattered Glass 6. If U Seek Amy 7. Amnesia 8. Unusual You (with way less auto-tune) 9. Blur 10. Mannequin 11. Trouble 12. My Baby So, what do you guys think?! Is it a good follow-up to "Blackout"?! gui Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Perhaps I would change the cover (not for that example you gave us) but really I think it's a good record. I get they were trying to clean her image after 2007 and perhaps that was necessary but I don't think artistically it has a lot of input from Britney which today I kind of see as a problem, but I like it as a whole.
Reginald Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I think it's her second-best album, after Blackout These two eras were peak quality 12
itsnickcray Posted July 14 Posted July 14 (edited) It personally think it's the perfect followup of Blackout. It's so poppy & commercial. It has every element of past Britney but more modern and fresh. It feels like a true celebration and comeback of why we all love Britney Spears. That's why I don't mind the the tracklist. Let it be a lil chaotic, we're celebrating something. Edited July 14 by itsnickcray 3
Rev8 Posted July 14 Posted July 14 The OG cover is nice? tf Anyways, it's okay it served fun bops (Circus, Womanizer, IUSA) and interesting gems (Unusual You, Blur, Shattered Glass) (and let me not miss Mannequin and Lace & Leather) it's really underrated imo but I understand why fans wont flock to it as a magnum opus
TakeYouToHell Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I personally enjoy it more than Blackout Womanizer is one of my favorite Britney songs ever. 5
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Womanizer is definitely a perfect follow-up single post-Blackout era for sure The album itself is good; it's like they tried to make another Blackout album, but for a wider audience imo
Curaga Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Yes, I actually like Circus better, oop 🙊 Aside from the singles, Kill the Lights, Shattered Glass, Mmm Papi, Mannequin, Lace and Leather, Phonography, Amnesia are all amazing I really love the campy moments/lines on this album: "Lights, camera, ACTION! " "See, I'm mommy... and that makes you papi... and that makes us lovey " The entirety of Phonography tbh — what hilarious song I like that her sense of humor came through on this album. 7
Breakdown Posted July 14 Posted July 14 first of all the og cover is good and the cover in your post is fugly. secondly magnum opus is a bit of a stretch. thirdly, circus was a fine follow up and did its job. it's nothing really special just like basically the rest of her albums, but it's enjoyable, i guess. 2
Erreur2 La Nature Posted July 14 Posted July 14 (edited) Quote Most people label it as a weak record Really ? I don't remember reading people criticizing Circus. It's a fantastic album. The album cover has always been amazing too, I wouldn't take seriously someone who pretends its bad lol. I personally love it even more than the bible of pop. Edited July 14 by Erreur2 La Nature 2
geddymonster Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I personally think it's her best album precisely because it's eclectic and has a little bit of all her past sounds. You have some pure pop bops ("Circus," "If U Seek Amy"), some grittier bangers ("Womanizer," "Kill the Lights"), some of her signature mid-tempos ("Blur," "Phonography"), a couple of nice ballads ("Out from Under," "My Baby"), and a sprinkling of the love/hate quirky tracks that she's known for ("Mmm Papi," "Mannequin"). It's also the one album to feature all of her best collaborators from throughout her career-Max Martin, Bloodshy & Avant, and Danja. Plus other big hitters like Greg Kurstin, Guy Sigsworth, and Fernando Garibay. 5
Rico Shameless v2 Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I love the OG cover actually. It looked innocent despite what she just endured. As far as it being a good follow-up, yes. I would only cut Out From Under and My Baby or at least have had them deep in the bonus cuts in favor of Amnesia & Trouble. They were clearly label "ballad" choices and mess up the flow of the record. And despite them being dragged I think Mmm Papi & Mannequin were quirky and very on brand Britney for what she served pop. 1
TrashMagiq Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I think Circus was a great follow-up to Blackout. It always confused me how mixed the opinions on this album are.
KKKIMO92 Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Songs are good, image is cute. It's really a return to form for her as a pop princess. That's why she continued to have a successful following era of Female Fatale. 1
naval23 Posted July 14 Posted July 14 It was the 6th biggest album of 2009 on the Billboard 200 - her highest since Oops Of her albums it spent the most weeks in the top 10 since Oops Her first album to have 2 top 3 hits including a #1 since BOMT 2
MattieB Posted July 14 Posted July 14 It felt like going from the dark, rebellious sister to a light clubby sister who played it safe it was regressive imo like Stripped to B2B or Under My Skin to TBDT
Avenger Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I am actually quite fond of Circus, Kill the lights - Unusual you - Blur are definitely some of the best Brit songs I have ever heard!

Blackout was definitely a much bigger leap forward, but the industry had it out for Britney and the album didn't get the shine it deserved. When "Womanizer" dropped, it was one of the first electropop smashes and it gagged the GP. Circus just gets overshadowed because Blackout's electropop style is heavily mimicked, but Circus was also at the forefront of new sounds at its time. 4
ChooseyLover Posted July 14 Posted July 14 It was a stunning follow-up. Despite the conservatorship taking over her life it does feel like a Blackout 2.0. for the most part (Kill the Lights being the prime example of that), and with stronger singles. Blur, Amnesia, Unusual You... are outstanding deep cuts; while Circus, IUSA and Womanizer are classics that solidified Brit's career after the world tried to end her. I think she could have done a better album on her own terms and under different circumstances 100% but what we got all things considered was brilliant. 3
Generation Braindead Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Phonography should be on OH track list. Yes Circus is a career highlight to for Britney. 1
