beyonce got all the heat throughout the years

I dont think it would be a tad controverial today. I mean things already changed even when Miley did her thing at the VMAs back then. If Miley did that around the time of Janet she would have been cancelled too.

It was never about what happened, it was about where it happened.

Janet had interlude on her AFY tour where her nipples were exposed and no one cared, because if you went to Janet show you knew what to expect. Superbowl was not the place for it.

Pretty much all of them in some way, but here are a few examples:

-Britney....reporters asking her about her sex life and her boobs when she was literally still a teenager and of course the way the media hounded her for years

-Janet for the Superbowl incident, it still is so confusing to me how she got backlash for it?

-Taylor for being slut shamed for having a dating in her late teens/early 20s.  People reduced her songwriting to a "trick" to "get back at her exes" rather than a craft and skill.  I think that's one big reason the Taylor's Versions have been such a hit, because society has grown a bit from those days and can look her music a little more objectively now.  That said, people still dismiss her artistry because she has a lot of young females in her fanbase.

-This might be a curveball for some, but thought it was worth mentioning....Haim.   They're in a very male dominant genre and they face a lot that their peers don't have to deal with.  Their song "Man from the Magazine" details it pretty well.  Este got asked in an interview if she makes the same faces in bed that she makes when playing the bass, Danielle has talked about going to music stores and employees patronizing her (showing her the beginner guitars, saying 'why don't you play something for me!', etc).

-Kelly has been pretty open about the misogyny she faced behind the scenes; not being taken seriously as a songwriter, having male songwriters take credit for her work just because they could, etc.

Janet and Britney in terms of having their careers negatively affected.

The vitriol that Madonna had/has to put up with is insane and some of it is ageism but it's the kind of ageism that definitely wouldn't have happened to a man. It just never seemed to truly impact her career because she was just that successful.

Agreed. The only reason Madonna singles started to flop was because she stopped making music as good as her old music. She's the only popstar who could truly have been relevant in the mainstream even today at her age. Her own insecurities are what led to her downfall in Top 40 music.

Aaliyah

She took all of the heat for the marriage scandal and had the industry wanting to push her out to protect R. Kelly. She survived but the dark cloud stayed over her until the end (unfairly). The black community wasn't kind to her after the annulment. In some ways it was similar to how Rihanna was treated after the assault from Chris but she was vindicated once Chris assaulted Karreuche and then everyone realized how violent he was/is. Aaliyah unfortunately never got that vindication due to her passing before people finally saw R.Kelly for what he is.

Won't even get into how she gets thrown under the bus for the demise of Roc-A-Fella.

I'll add that for Mariah not only did she experience misogyny throughout her entire career:

Early: success attributed to husband, which to this day is still being spun as a narrative by old men in music forums.

Mid-late: success destroyed by husband; the "diva" accusations. Like literally when it came to Mariah, "diva" was suddenly derogatory, Eminem dissing her and getting away with it

She also experienced racism. She was too white for the black community, and too black for the white community. She eventually harnessed this ambiguity by being the queen of crossovers and jumping genres, thus breaking so many records. However, this also resulted in her lack of industry support from specific groups.

But the worst cases of misogyny are probably Britney and Janet. Madonna to some extent too.

Oh please, Madonna was literally banned from US Radios for trying to criticze/mock Bush and the holy US politics on very delicate moment. There's a reason she kept finding commercial success overseas with her remaining albums, being as great as her peak or not. America abandoned her because she was an opinionated woman doing too much, her attitudes overshadowed her musical effort and it backfired.

Janet Jackson and Madonna. Lil kim big victim in hip hop. Everybody still celebrates Biggie fat cockeyed ass because they like him and his music and don't care about him choking her into she pass out. Beyonce goes through misogyny but she also gets a lot of hate from Black Women  and White women. Plus she has racist white men on her neck. I think Beyonce just doesn't let that break her publicly.

I can't get over Janet. She was serving quality and got cancelled because of anatomy.

Janet was literally erased from pop history over a visible female nipple

it's not even close

Janet Jackson - Her legacy erased because of the Superbowl incident, people now trying to rewrite history and say she is "only known for being Michael's sister."

Yoko Ono - Gets all the blame for The Beatles falling apart and people still have pure hatred towards her for it well over 50 years later, all her artistic endeavors are ridiculed. I've even seen people say she should've been the one shot instead of John Lennon.

Britney Spears - Can't even have fun without people questioning her sanity, the conservatorship, all the headlines mocking her mental health status, her weight, **** shaming her, calling her a bad mother, etc.

Liv Kristine was fired from her groups twice, and while the first time is arguable (though a bunch of men deciding to fire a woman for no reason does strike me as sexist), the second time was definitely misogyny-motivated as it was her ex-husband exercising his power in a group literally named after and built around her. Tarja's/Anette's dismissals from Nightwish are also sus, they claimed that Tarja was acting like a diva when in reality she just didn't vibe with the machoism rampant in the group and the men's antics.

Britney

all it took was 20lb and she went from sex icon to a repulsive blobby mess to the public eye. All the news papers were talking about how disgusting, undesirable and fat she looked, and I felt so bad.
