Has Drake's dominance begun to falter?

Obviously Drake continues to remain one of the biggest names in music & pop culture, and he has the receipts to back it up as he was officially the most successful male solo artist globally of the past 4 years.

But 2024 has been looking less rosy for him so far… :ninja:

Not only has he been surpassed in 2024 Spotify streams by The Weeknd, despite Drake's latest studio album being released more recently.

But it's also not just Abel who's getting more streams than Drake, as he's "only" in 7th place on Spotify's Global Artist Chart, below Sabrina Carpenter who's getting ~30M streams daily.

Once again these are still big numbers ofc, but it is more of a far cry from his heydays when he'd be a permanent resident at the top, or at least the top 2. This is where he used to rank in past years:

Oct. 21, 2021: #1

(the furthest back this chart goes)

Jun. 26, 2022: #1

Jun. 26, 2023: #2

Jun. 26, 2024: #7

So would you say that Drake's dominance has begun to falter?

Or is he just going through a lull period and will bounce back soon?

I think he's too creatively bankrupt to stage a comeback at this point, especially after Kendrick exposed his... interesting relationship with Atlanta rap music.

He'll get a couple more #1s featuring major artists (Morgan Wallen probably), but the Drake era of rap is over.

I'm waiting to see how his next album performs before claiming one way or another, but here's to hoping :suburban:

He's doing charity work this year because he's the reason Kenny got 2 #1's. The boy needs his rest

In all seriousness, you should wait until his next album to say.

No, Drake is a powerhouse and has an insane career and dedicated fanbase. He's solidified.

i think this will leave a stain on his career. bc kendrick called it out.

like wbk drake likes collabing with (most times new or underground) artists with the intent to capitalize off their style/sound for his benefit in exchange to grant them mainstream success and networking in the industry. ultimately he will be fine but prob get teased a lot now.

Not yet, but Kendrick's blow was massive

Kendrick is far from being the most successful male artist of the year

if anything this will work in his favor because he was on the brink of actual-ACTUAL overexposure.

now he can take an actual break and come back, he's great at telling a story and the more time he has the more he'll put into it.

He turns 38 this year. It wasn't going to last forever lol.

A bit for sure. His past releases have basically free fall after a couple of weeks and the Kendrick beef made it only worse. Not saying he's over but you can see that his power has decreased.

He hasn't had a real hit album with real big hits since Scorpion. Everything else has just been quick little peaks. He's been able to get away with stuffing his catalogue with features and collabs every few months but he's been on decline. Kendrick was just the final nail in the coffin.

Like @Devin said, the playlist albums would have to come to an abrupt end. In order for Drake to bounce back, he has to release a "4:44" or "Life is Good". Which he won't do cause in his mind he's forever 21, so I'd say the downslide has imminent while he'll still probably have high peaking songs they might drop off quickly like Family Matters

Begun?! Girl, it's in full effect. Kendrick just massively eviscerated and microwaved that ass very publicly. The equivalent of a massive damage pokemon move on his current career. We will see the lasting ramifications of this not only on the charts but even moreso in the public image and discourse surrounding Drake for years to come.

Drake can bounce back from it, but a lot will need to change going forward if he wants to repair people taking him seriously. The best move would be actually making music with substance again.
