heckinglovato Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Not posting the below tweets because they meet the viral threshold (most don't), but to ask a question: Is support for celebrities and stan culture finally dwindling as people begin to wake up? 1 4
Hexchromatica Posted May 29 Posted May 29 The biggest of those tweets being from someone who goes viral every other day. A few people logging off doesn't mean we actually have our priorities in order, nothing will change 1
tost1 Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Nope, important issues are just used to try and cancel the celebs people hate 14
BlackAura Posted May 29 Posted May 29 No, people just implement stan culture into the important issues.
Popular Post Blade Runner Posted May 29 Popular Post Posted May 29 (edited) Please say that to the men stanning SPORTS on a daily basis too. Apparently stan culture is only gross if it involves singers and actors/actresses, and queer related stuff. Next week is the Champions League final. A sporting global event 100000x bigger than the MET Gala, so I expect the same kind of outrage. It is PATHETIC that you don't see this discourse around men like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo (1.1B combined followers on IG alone), but only around the usuals. Namiskine Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Why would stan culture be incompatible with awareness? What's happening right now is - unfortunately - not the first, nor the last major problem this world is facing, and people do need sources of entertainment and detachment in harsh times. 2
Onyxmage Posted May 29 Posted May 29 (edited) Celebrities arent just music artists. Sports culture is WORSE than ever with people literally THROWING themselves at football, basketball and soccer players in every country. As someone said before its worse than ever. Also do people actually still use twitter? Edited May 29 by Onyxmage 1
abelfenty Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Again, these tweets only further prove people care more about trying to cancel celebrities than the actual events going on 1 1
liam13 Posted May 29 Posted May 29 performative these people prolly think a post from celebs could stop the war. it's their choice tho, good for them 2 1
concubine Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Blocking and unfollowing celebrities is literally still stan culture..
cuteboyzay Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Lmao, No. They're just gonna use it as ammo to stan other celebrities that stand up for important political issues. Or use them as ammo to cancel them. It's quite unfortunate the way U.S. weaponizes this ****. But the truth is stan culture is DEF not dwindling. And quite frankly is becoming much more parasocial. 1
Popular Post Cain Posted May 29 Popular Post Posted May 29 No? Life contains multitudes and you can care about more things than once I'm sorry but the self righteous tone of people being like 'how can you care about this when there's people dying???' as if people haven't always died and there hasn't always been war and we have always compartmentalised all of that in order to also enjoy other things in life… that's just human life 15
Thesedays Posted May 29 Posted May 29 It should but no it isn't. Celeb culture and stan culture is a monster we already lost control of.

The way it's almost always female celebrities only who are being criticized for not speaking up. You'll never see the twitter crowd go for a big male celebrity like this. Men always get such an easy pass in their eyes. 4

Not pop culture consumption per se, that's not unhealthy in the slightest. But like caring about a celeb honor as if they're an extension of yourself? Yes, that's bizarre. Acting as if you personally know the character of what is ultimately a product you're consuming? Not normal and not justifiable. Obviously, I already partook in this, so I understand where people get the urge to behave like that, but it's still ****** up.
Europe Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Film discussion is alive and well too, in fact the comic book stans are experiencing collective depression because the Furiosa movie bombed. It is the subject of a lot of attention. So I would not say these tendencies are becoming smaller. Like just this 1 thread has 3000 comments and there are plenty more like this.
Illuminati Posted May 29 Posted May 29 (edited) If anyone was unironically following Kim Kardashian to begin with they are likely a shitty person themselves. This won't absolve that This internet revolution thing happens every couple of years when a new set of teenagers reach the age of discovering that the world isn't fair. Edited May 29 by Illuminati
State of Grace. Posted May 29 Posted May 29 (edited) I think it did have some impact yes, at where I am from. But celeb and stan culture will never fade. Not surprised to see people here deflecting to football players/other celebs. Yall are just mad because your faves were rightfully called out so you try to spin it into some "they're only coming for my pop girls! how performative!" bs. And don't get me wrong, I do agree that pressure should be put on those men as well. And it is happening to many of them if you open your eyes. Mohamed Salah has been a punching bag for months because his shameless ass has been silent about the genocide. Benzema, Beckham, Mahrez, Ozil, Pogba, and several other big names in football have spoken about it as far as I know. Edited May 29 by State of Grace. 1

It is, and I'm not denying everyone on this site is mentally ill But, this has also been going on since last century (at least), The Beatles? Elvis? People have been obsessed with known figures and they always will be
airplane Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Not really but stan culture needs to go. Idol worshipping celebrities needs to stop. Seek help!

I mean, yes, but is society being patriarchal and misogynist supposed to absolve stan culture being unhinged? I don't really get these arguments where the point seems to be, "Well, it's ****** up when they do it, and no one criticizes it; ergo, let's not criticize this other ****** up behavior." Shouldn't it be, "Let's acknowledge both are ****** up"? Also, I hate football, but I'd argue a sports championship or something like the Olympics actually have a much bigger societal value than the ******* MET Gala. Not that it absolves people from being unhinged about Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, or whatever. This I agree is just as messed up even though it is normalized to an extent
