It was #15 on the year end off of just the first 4-5 months of its run and dominated 3 radio formats despite WBT staying on power rotation all year. If anything, it's a prime example of why the cannibalizing thing isn't true Flex is a bad song and was not going to be a bigger hit regardless of WFH (and it's not like 5H were hitmakers, WFH is their only top 10 ). Same applies to most ATRL examples of a huge hit cannibalizing another single. Unconditionally, Birthday, You Da One, The Weeknd's In Your Eyes... just songs that simply weren't that strong / smash worthy anyway. Shake It Off was blocked from #01 and could have been even bigger. Flex is a fantastic song that never truly took off because of WFH's staying power. It even had a TikTok resurgence last year. Cannabalization isn't a narrative. It's a reality for artists when management can't predict the staying power of a monster hit.

And Avril's singles were always hit or miss commercially. Girlfriend was the last time she saw the top 10 so it was a larger problem, not Girlfriend's fault You Da One is a generic song that everyone disliked, with an awful video and no promo. It was not going to be a hit anyway. Rihanna had no problem having 2, 3 or even 4 simultaneous hits in previous eras Kiss It Better was not cannibalized by Work. It was cannibalized by Needed Me because it was a dual single, which never works. Different case

That happened to her multiple time. Good Girl Gone Bad/Shut Up And Drive is another example. She always released the second single right when the first single was smashing and most cases it was overshadowed.

Disturbia went #1 while Take A Bow was still #4 on the Hot 100. Only Girl smashed at the same time as WMN and historically went #1 after WMM did despite being released first She's had more examples of singles coexisting than singles, allegedly, killing another single. And even in those cases, it was just a bad single choice. Pretty sure the common consensus on Shut Up and Drive remains that there were like 6 worthier songs to release at the time

That's why i said most of time, or half of the time, the first singles overshadowed the second one.
Trip Posted July 31 Posted July 31 post album singles rarely work in the streaming era, unless it is a remix with another artist or randomly goes viral on tiktok stop comparing todays music with the 2000s/2010s achievements 2

I never thought about that, but it totally makes sense. 2

dangerousbutera Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Post album singles are notoriously difficult to make into a big hit in the streaming era, there are far more examples of them being unsuccessful than successful. It's especially harder I fear when the song had already gone viral with the album release and so by the time the official push came for it, the hype had died down (this is why it worked with Levitating - its viral moments came after its release as a single, not before). Most of the time, a post-album single becomes a big hit due to going viral in time with its push. 4
wantedyoutogrow Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Can't believe the biggest fumble of the entire era is the lack or radio support and playlisting… 1

Twizzy Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Should have been Supernatural that got single treatment, TBIM already had its viral moment during album release when it was plastered all over Tiktok. Intro and WCBF kept the album afloat for a couple months. Should've been an obscure song that Tiktok hadn't touched
