What can Dua Lipa do to garner a fanbase/interest?

It's not an impossible thing for pop girls to secure a fanbase. Gaga did it. Taylor did it. Bey did it. Olivia did it.

Dua Lipa obviously has not done it, after seeing the disastrous numbers for her new album.

So what can she do to course-correct this?

nothing, the best she can do is to flop gracefully, people actually remember things

if she comes out of this untouched, with dignity and focus on new material she will be more respected in the long run

No offense but remember what..? no one knows the album is out which is the main issue personally , there simply wasn't enough attention or dedicated fan base

Yeah people are used to girl pop starts to be show ponies, overly dramatic, sharing and exploiting their personal life, creating beefs etc.

Dua is too smart for that and her fan base as well Oprah Winfrey Concert GIF by CBS

no amount of gimmicks will save the album, better to move on and re-focus, she's very smart, she will bounce back

Stop paying attention to gays and twitter trolls on the internet and keep releasing music.

God it's annoying at this point. All the think pieces from your studio apartments.

1. Take a 4-year hiatus to focus on professional dance training, possibly learn a new instrument or two, and undergo vocal lessons, similar to how K-pop artists do.

2. Explore various genres to diversify her musical repertoire.

3. Maintain an active presence on social media, sharing snippets of her work and showcasing her progress in dance and music.

imo what seems to be the issue this era is that she is neither taking enough artistic chances, nor playing it safe enough. she's in this middle zone where to the average listener music the music seems like a continuation of the Future Nostalgia style without the big pop hooks and super catchy choruses, making it harder to connect to it from a GP standpoint and then for more invested music listeners, the album is not really pushing things far enough to make the bits of new production and stylizations feel well-utilized and interesting and not providing a lot to latch onto artistically.

imo, I'd have loved if she went full force with the idea of her as some dance-pop diva, and really underlined that with quirky productions that take twists and turns, closer to club mixes in the way they build the hype and present mood/emotion through music rather than lyrics alone.

had she done this with the same songs just longer, extended mixes, she might have fostered a more Carly-Rae or Robyn type fandom where they just think she is an amazing maker of pop music rather than someone who necessarily needs to slay the charts. She could then easily release radio/streaming edits for those not interested in long songs but I do think there needed to be something that shows if the songwriting itself doesn't hit as hard as before, then the intention and the overall production and final result does.

Do something to define her individually more to get people invested in Dua the person

When I think of the biggest pop girl fan bases of recent times, I think of Taylor, Bey, Gag, Ariana, Nicki, Selena, Lana, Miley, Olivia. Hell, even Lorde somewhat

Selena, Miley, and Ariana got theirs because of their starts in children's television so people grew up with them and have a nostalgic attachment. Even still, Selena puts her personal life all over the e tabloids and internet to keep people invested; she's not afraid to be messy. Miley has shown herself as a bold risk taker that marches to the beat of her own drum. Ariana has shown herself to be very emotionally raw and pours her biggest tragedies into her music

Gaga is weird and made herself an LGBT icon because of her support when it wasn't popular. Bey is a legend in the black community because of her activism. Taylor pours her life into her songs. Olivia does too. Lana too. Lorde too. Nicki is insanely funny and brazen

What is Dua Lipa? What is her music?

Her few fans like to say she actually has sooo much personality, but…..where? I think she seems super chill and someone who I'd dance with at a club or whatever, but she's not shown herself to be funny, emotionally vulnerable, overly bold/brazen, messy, overly intelligent/wise beyond her years, cutting edge fashion-wise, sonically experimental, etc.

People love to say Taylor is so popular because she "appeals to everyone", but that's not true. She's extremely outspoken about her life, a little narcissistic, she overshares, she's kinda a nerd, extremely cringey. That turns a lot of people off. But it galvanizes those that DO support her to want to ride for her even harder. She's the heartbroken cringey nerd that "made it", so all the heartbroken cringey nerds worship and protect her (I love Taylor's music it's not shade just tea)

Dua is trying to appeal to everyone, and she's going to end up appealing to no one once she doesn't get any hits for a year or two if she doesn't pivot. I've seen people say that artists shouldn't be expected to pour every detail of their lives to the masses to have success, and I agree. But that's not how psychology works; people have to know her to want to support her

She would need music that is more than just "bops". All her hits are great for radio and parties, but there's nothing about them that screams "this is Dua Lipa". And I don't necessarily mean she should have lyrics about her life, but she doesn't have something that is immediately identifiable like for example Rihanna's tone (to use someone else that is mainly known for her hit songs).

Also, I think she would need albums that have a narrative/a story/a theme. Radical Optimism's theme could have been great "remaining optimistic when things don't go your way", but how is that theme actually conveyed in the album, or in the visuals?

There's just not much to hold onto, to dissect, to discuss about her. So far, she's just been the girl with albums that are just a playlist of bops. And it's fine, we need artists like that too,  but that's not what builds a fanbase.

If she takes a 4 year hiatus she's gonna pull similar numbers to Normani

OT: conclude this era gracefully. Take a 9-12 months hiatus (as in, OUT of the public eye), lock herself in the studio and kidnap some talented producers then come out swinging with a BOP and promote it DSN style.

Her music needs a personal/confessional touch to it. Happy For You is a cute start towards that direction

To start making music that isn't void of any personality for starters.

The music isn't hitting like her last two eras. She needs to conclude this one and move on to something else. The people are here for her if she puts out something good. What we've gotten just isn't it for many.
