thats when all the D-Z list pop girls were in their prime.

 

it wasn't until Rihanna + Britney comeback where it felt like things were picking up again.

No it wasn't

it was the time where it became commercialized, sure - but it wasn't a bad time for rap at All

 

in comparison, 80s rap scene sounds like a parody (and no disrespect to the start, but many rappers have made fun of it also)

We don't even get rap hits like this anymore. Most rap these days are so faceless!

The scene was more eventful perhaps, but the quality of music itself wasn't really particulary strong. Nostalgia continues clouding people's perception. 
 

Of course, this applies to mainstream music.
