The fact that we're basically splitting hairs now about how much bigger this will be than her previous biggest weeks, "her" already being the only person to ever have 4, 5, and 6 weeks over a million units in the US

Shouldn't SEA be higher with 800m first week streams that hdd is predicting?

SEA will be 500-750K.

scorpion moved 572k units in SEA (record). I'm just being conservative in case the album has a weaker hold than 1989 tv (which had a weaker hold than midnights)

it won't beat Adele's records, but this number is equally mindblowing :jonny6:

For SEA, we prob need to wait for today's number to see how stable the streams are.

This is absolutely insane in 2024

But question, to break Adele's record is total activity or only pure sales?

to be fair, i think it's rather rare for albums to be delivered right ON release day. I have ordered vinyls from her store before and they took a week or so to get to me and im in a major city. However, maybe her team anticipated the big increase in demand and prepared so that most of her pre orders were shipped and delivered on release day. Her final numbers will be very dependent on her team but also 1. did her team deliver a majority of the pre orders on Friday? 2. is her team deliberately withholding reporting some data so that her sales dont look as frontloaded (like what I think happened with 1989tv). 3. the rate at which luminate/billboard are filtering/registering sales (again, like with 1989 tv)

I've never received a pre order on release day lol. It usually doesn't arive until like Wednesday and I'm in a big city lol

As long as her team ships the album this week it doesn't matter when they arrive. :rip:

They could ship cds on Thursday and they'd count towards the 1st week. :suburban:

I'm gonna be extremely delusional and say that this could be possible since her 13th album would be her most anticipated one, even more after The Eras Tour wraps up and she comes back from a well-deserved two year break

25 wasn't on streaming so i believe that's all pure sales.

I don't think so. Billboard changed the rules.

Blondie is always playing the long game.

Billboard will probably care more about total activity but still report on pure sales, in the (seemingly unlikely) event that she breaks the total activity record. The pure sales one is, of course, not going to happen anyway.

Y'all are worried about Adele's record, but the important thing is she beat her own record.

If she beats Adele's then that's an added bonus. She'll probably do 2.5 - 3M units first week.

yes, but the billboard article clearly states that the pre orders counted are only the ones delivered on friday

Quote

The 1.4 million sales number registered for the album is inclusive of both over-the-counter and download purchases of The Tortured Poets Department made on April 19, in addition to a likely large number of pre-orders of the album through Internet retailers that were shipped to customers for arrival on release day.

But i think what they probably meant was that as long as the shipping label was created before Friday, they were counted. Idk it's semantics at this point but i agree with you, they count shipped albums not delivered albums, so maybe billboard just wasn't clear with their writing

I mean, none of my pre-ordered copies have shipped yet, so I'd have to assume that there's at least some large quantity that hasn't moved yet. That's the point I made though, that this is already the largest home-delivery of an album ever (and might be right up there with the largest deliveries of one good from one source at one time) and the logistics are probably so challenging that they hit a threshold of the number they could feasibly ship out (especially given the additional challenge of timing things so as few arrive too early as possible), as opposed to them just running out of pre-sales to ship or an artificial threshold put in place in an attempt to pace things throughout the week. 1989TV was ridiculously anomalous, in a way that doesn't seem to be happening again, because I'd be astounded if that 1.4 figure didn't include any of her website sales.

All that's to say that I wouldn't read anything into whether or not she's still capable of toppling the Adele record. The next Billboard update (should we expect it tomorrow or Monday?) will hopefully provide greater clarity.

Astounding first day sales!

Only more than 1 Million sales to surpass the all time 2nd place (2.416 M)..

I doubt she'll crack the 3M mark though, let alone surpass Adele's record, but we'll see..

P.S. This album is such a reverse Midnights experience for me. It sounds horrible at initial listen, but gets better and better with every replay..

On their Midnights article, it appears the second update was on Monday, which I think is also true of HDD - so not likely for us to get a meaningful update tomorrow.

Well if it's only ones that have been actually delivered then my 14 physicals from her webstore won't be here til Monday/Tuesday. :hoetenks:
