Fitzswiftie
Notoriously known for being a cursed category, with previously winner Taffy Danoff of Starland Vocal Band notably saying in a 2002 interview for VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders: "We got two of the five Grammys – one was Best New Artist. So that was basically the kiss of death and I feel sorry for everyone who's gotten it since" Whoever, this century, the appears to curse is largely broken Winners whom had a #1 hit after winning • Christina Aguilera (2000 winner) • Alicia Keys (2002 winner) • Maroon 5 (2005 winner) • Adele (2009 winner) • John Legend (2006 winner) • Sam Smith (2015 winner) • Olivia Rodrigo (2022 winner) • Megan Thee Stallion (2021 winner) Winners whom had top tens hits after winning • Christina Aguilera (2000 winner) • Alicia Keys (2002 winner) • Evanescence (2004 winner) • Maroon 5 (2005 winner) • John Legend (2006 winner) • Carrie Underwood (2007 winner) • Adele (2009 winner) • Bon Iver (2012 winner) • Sam Smith (2015 winner) • Meghan Trainor (2016 winner) • Chance the Rapper (2017 winner) • Dua Lipa (2019 winner) • Billie Eilish (2020 winner) • Megan Thee Stallion (2021 winner) • Olivia Rodrigo (2022 winner) Winners with at least one platinum album after winner • Christina Aguilera (2000 winner) • Alicia Keys (2002 winner) • Norah Jones (2003 winner) • Evanescence (2004 winner) • Maroon 5 (2005 winner) • John Legend (2006 winner) • Carrie Underwood (2007 winner) • Adele (2009 winner) • Zac Brown Band (2010 winner) • Sam Smith (2015 winner) • Meghan Trainor (2016 winner) • Dua Lipa (2019 winner) • Billie Eilish (2020 winner) • Megan Thee Stallion (2021 winner) • Olivia Rodrigo (2022 winner) Acts with another Grammy win after winning • Christina Aguilera (2000 winner) • Alicia Keys (2002 winner) • Norah Jones (2003 winner) • Maroon 5 (2005 winner) • John Legend (2006 winner) • Carrie Underwood (2007 winner) • Amy Winehouse (2008 winner) • Adele (2009 winner) • Zac Brown Band (2010 winner) • Esperanza Spalding (2011 winner) • Jack Antonoff (as part of fun.) (2013 winner) • Sam Smith (2015 winner) • Dua Lipa (2019 winner) • Billie Eilish (2020 winner) • Olivia Rodrigo (2022 winner) • Samara Joy (2023 winner) Acts with another Grammy nom after winning, not won since • Bon Iver (2012 winner) • Megan Thee Stallion (2021 winner) From the 24 winners this century, only 5 non-jazz winners (20%) haven't appeared in any of the multiple metrics since (Shelby Lynne, fun., Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Chance the Rapper, Alessia Cara). Lynne was the flukiest of fluke wins, fun disbanded after 1 album (but spawned a soloist with #1 hit and thee superstar producer of the decade), both Chance and Cara released bad music that stalled their momentum. Macklemore is the only win this century with them actively winning the award is what derailed their career. So with all this information, is the infamous Best New Artist curse broken?
