Jack! Posted April 18 Posted April 18 (edited) I'm glad to see a pro-active out look on reducing the use of cigarettes (especially as an ex-smoker) but this date-based ban doesn't work and it shows in New Zealand pulling the plug on it too. So from 2027 anyone born in 2010 or later can't legally buy cigarettes. Right now the average life expectancy is 80, people have been living longer than that however so say someone is lucky to live in surplus of 10 years and reach their 90s. People could still be legally buying cigarettes into 2100+, so we're talking about another 75+ years until being a "smoke-free" country becomes a realistic idea, but we're ignoring the 15 or moreso PM's that'll come into power between that time that can revoke this, there's not enough clarity on import banning and legally aged people buying for under-agers. I rarely give the Tories props for anything but it's a welcomed stance I appreciate, but unfortunately it'll never stick. Edited April 18 by Jack!

Slight but important difference. Parliament is elected by the people, so if in future Parliament is elected with a majority in favour of revoking, well that's democracy.
nostalgic Posted April 18 Posted April 18 Smoking is disgusting but prohibition never works and just creates an unregulated, underground black market potentially tainted with even worse substances. Education & targeted anti-smoking campaigns are key. 2 1
Daddy Posted April 18 Posted April 18 It's 2024, we had enough time to learn that prohibition is never working and makes things worse for everyone. 1 1
HungryByTheBuffet Posted April 18 Posted April 18 Only ugly people hate smoking and smoke but the way the ban works makes sense

DATRL Posted May 22 Posted May 22 (edited) It will reduce the harmful effects of smoking on individuals and society. But for sure all smokers will look for alternatives. Personally, I find vapes from https://relxths.com more relaxing than smoking cigars. Edited May 27 by DATRL
PoisonPill Posted May 22 Posted May 22 Thank you. It's about time that smokers were treated as badly as society treats heroin addicts - or worse because their death-habit inflicts harm on unwilling people too.
DevilsRollTheDice Posted May 22 Posted May 22 Hmmm while I definitely support more public awareness about the risks associated with smoking as well as taxing the absolute **** out of cigarettes, we know that drug bans frequently backfire. Impoverished populations are also disproportionately hurt by these laws. I also feel this feels like government overreach? I say that as someone who is a huge proponent of big government, but it's just not logical. Alcohol is just as bad for you, causes many accidents, and impairs people's judgement yet that isn't going away.
