Well, if a 50 years album is matching her numbers, Taylor better bring her A game next time.

I love when articles like this come out since there are so many people on here who try their best every day to deny it or make excuses about it :allears:

In the US, at least, I no longer think it's a stretch to argue she might even be bigger, or at least on her way since they have a forty-something year head start.

They're already using the payola argument with no evidence :jonnycat:

In US, i agree. I don't think anyone can deny this, her success is overwhelming.

In UK, there are other acts that were more dominating but that doesn't make Taylor's success less impressive.

In Turkey, teens like her i guess. My age group (around 40) are more rock and MJ/Madonna oriented and doesn't listen to younger artists much.

Can we just stop the madness with this woman?

I appreciate that she appeals to a certain demographic and has achieved crazy amounts of success. She's pretty unproblematic and has catchy bops here and there too.

But I just don't see it. Vocals are nothing special. Performances don't compare to those who lead in that lane. Songwriting is impressive in places but doesn't qualify IMO the all-encompassing hype apportioned to her.

I can best interpret the hoopla around her as such..

IMO, her popularity is over-indexed in a certain demo (middle white America and similar), which is the largest portion of the US. Said audience largely dictates popularity and taste palettes on a global scale too. Thus, Taylor almost automatically appeals to a much broader audience than a lot of her peers.  More than anything, she is also the archetypical "Becky" the world at large has been conditioned to see as a…prize. Literally back to Goldilocks and all of the fables from way back when. Genteel, wholesome white girl next door, sweet and amiable. It's not shade, it's literally facf in the context of socialization and globalization.

Btw none of this is a slight to her, but I can't be convinced it's her talent or her output that principally contribute to the cult like hype around her. Because, I'm sorry, she pales in comparison to many of her peers.

Another aspect many don't want to touch is the fact that she literally can never rival a Michael Jackson, for example, for the simple fact she does not have cross-generational, cross-racial, not cross-cultural reach.

As a POC, I can tell y'all for free that no one cares nor do they move when Taylor drops. En masse no one in the Urban diaspora knows what a "Tortured Poets Corner" is. By comparison, MJ was and is resonant with everyone, black, white, Asian, and everything else.

True phenom status, IMO, is making everyone (collectively) stop, look, listen and gush at one's output. Taylor appealing to the largest audience pool and resonating with them most is commendable but that does not make her comparable nor an equal to those who appeal to all.

The nearest thing to that is a Beyonce, but y'all aren't ready for that convo or will deliberately anchor that convo in sales when there are many more pillars to the discourse.

You mean the country where she's about to play 6 sold out stadium shows?

I'm talking about her recent output overall. Like… comparing Midnights or Evermore with Abbey Road or White Album is laughable.

The Beatles make generic pop music. Get over yourself.

So then why has the hive been focused more on Taylor instead of the new album they just got?

Yeah, god forbid we don't give a few white men with hideous bowl cuts credit for something they didn't invent.
