Indiana Jones 5 caused $130 million dollar loss for Disney

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny failed to cover its costs at the box office according to financial statements released on Friday which show that Disney spent $134.2m more on making the movie than it is understood to have received in ticket sales.

The film, features a digitally de-aged Ford. It came at a cost as the filings reveal that $79 million was spent on post-production work.

Data from industry analyst Box Office Mojo shows that Dial of Destiny grossed $384 million, just 49% of the takings of its prequel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Disney shot itself through the foot somewhat by launching the Disney+ streaming platform. Not only has it replaced the need to buy a DVD or Blu Ray, but Disney+ subscribers don't pay per movie. Instead they are billed monthly or annually and get access to a studio's entire library, along with any new content released during their subscription period. This means it isn't possible to attribute subscriber fees to specific productions, such as Dial of Destiny, and in turn that increases the need for pictures to succeed at the box office.

The dismal performance of Dial of Destiny piles pressure on Disney's embattled chief executive Bob Iger who spearheaded the acquisition of Lucasfilm and the development of the movies which have yet to cover the cost of it. Combined with losses generated by Disney+ this has led to Disney's share price falling by around 40% since its peak of $201.91 in March 2021.

I don't get why they keep doing things that no one asked, did anyone ask for a Indiana Jones movie? I loved the old ones but didn't want another one. Studios think that nostalgia will guarantee a hit movie but it's not always the case.

I was told it was because they went woke but their biggest budget flops are starring old white men. So what is the truth?

looks like they made a deal for 4 sequels way back when raiders was made.

it just took 40 years to get to the 4th.

I feel bad for both franchise and Harrison, he revisited both of his favorite roles in recent years and both bombed, I mean if covid didn't doubled its budget thanks to being on hold at least its numbers would've looked better.

Good. Disney deserves to eat some humble pie with their tragic quality lately.

It's the executives having no idea what the general public wants. Especially thier main demographic that are Millennials Disney Adults. Need to focus on the new emerging Gen Alpha crowd. Gen Z ain't into Pixar or Star Wars like our Gen was. They don't care for Disney anymore now that universal and other animation studios are putting out better content then Disney has since 2019. People blame Marvel, but Marvel is the one corner that has actually been hard carrying thier Movies. (Even in Marvels Flop Era, they still generate $3B every year from Marvel IP)

Disney really needs a New Frozen level IP and to get thier Blockbusters back to higher quality cinema.

Frozen 3 & 4 are coming and the 2 movies are interconnected so they are working on it.

Lies..

OT: the time for this movie was either a couple of years after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or RIGHT when Disney+ came out and they were doing the early release purchase option for films like Black Widow. Maybe if they had waited to release this until after Captain America 4 which also has Harrison Ford in it, it may have done better? Idk.

They literally have had several potential frozen level IPs this decade(Encanto and Turning Red immediately come to mind) but then instead of properly marketing and merchandising them, they gave them peanuts on purpose to help disguise how enormous of a failure Disney+ has been, it's easily one of the biggest mistakes in the history of the entertainment industry.

Premiering this at Cannes to critics a month before it's theatrical  release without an embargo

and letting that rotten tomato score fester and linger

just killed whatever chance this movie had :rip:

Just a dumb decision
