Their music is often a response to what has been said about them or giving their side of events. Beyonce made CC because she felt she was unwelcome amongst white dominated genres and audiences. Ariana made ES because she was being painted as a soulless villain. Rihanna made Anti because people said for years she wasn't an album artist. Olivia Rodrigo blew up with Sour because she was responding to her public love life. I feel like now more than ever, people want music with substance. I don't think a pop girl putting out an album of 'bops' flies anymore. If she's not saying anything personal, the album will most likely end up grouped with AI drivel like Ava Max. Which leads me to Ms. Lipa. She's very sweet and pretty. But does she have anything to say? 5 3

"sophmore 'make-or-break' dance album released a week early, leaked, all promo shutdown, goes on to succeed, makes the UK look good as a result" did well for her her first album was also a little bit of a moment because there hadn't been a breakout women in pop for ages = a narrative i'm not sure about this third album though because Dua is always singing about love, lost love etc. etc. so we'll sea 5

She needs to show that personality. She comes from an interesting place, she could explore other themes too. She seems to be pretty politically versed, maybe she could do something Madonna-like with her next era. 1

I like her a lot and I've seen her interviews and even listen to some of her podcast but feel like I know nothing much about her and can't fully connect to her the way I want. She seems kind of introverted so I won't hold that against her though. but yeah, I feel like to really last, you eventually have to be kind of polarizing and have to have a "THING" that's notorious about you. rn, she's just a gorgeous lady with great pop hits and sometimes we need someone in that space. But that space is always being occupied by someone new that comes and gos after a few years.
TROPICUM Posted March 31 Posted March 31 hm. a narrative always helps and is probably one big factor some of the albums you listed there smashed, but i don't think it's a necessity MOSTLY in this day and age tiktok will blow up any song as long as: a) it's very catchy b) it has a recognizable melody you can attach a dance to c) you can play around the lyrics of the song and add your own twist actually, the narrative part only helps to gain attention to your project. if you want hits, relatability to the everyday jane doe is the holy grail of the industry right now
